Background information
Origin Sheffield, England, UK
Years active 2001-present

Emma Brown is a pop singer from Sheffield, England. She rose to fame as one-third of the rock band Vulpes and went on to have a successful solo career. As a veteran artist on Urapopstar she has continued to land many hit singles, making her one of the most prolific artists in URAPS history.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Emma has been surrounded by music all her life - and it was at a very early age that she decided that this was her calling. Learning to play the piano from the age of seven, it was the guitar that really fascinated young Emma, and she received her first on her tenth birthday. This allowed Emma to not only imitate the rock musicians on her dad's record collection whom she'd grown to idolise, but she also started writing songs of her own. Granted they were rubbish... but it was a start!

Early career with Vulpes and solo beginnings[edit | edit source]

Main article: Vulpes
Emma got her big break when she joined forces with two friends from college, Scott Robertson and Karl Housam, to form Vulpes. The trio signed their first record deal in 2000 and achieved instant success, going top five with their debut single and reaching the number one spot less than a year later. Even then, however, Emma was branching out - towards the end of the promotion for debut Vulpes album The Ark, she recorded a duet with rock star Pinky Bob to release as a single. Unfortunately a change of plan meant that Emma had to release the track on her own instead: "I Can't Resist You" charged in at number two, giving Emma her first taste of solo success.

The next year saw Emma collaborate with dance act One Timers on the anthemic club track "(B*tch) Get Off My Man", which also charted at number two. Some time after releasing their second album, Emma's band mates announced that they wanted to take some time away from the spotlight - but Emma was hungry for more, and decided that it was finally time to make a solo album.

There was no denying Emma's potential as a star in her own right, as she'd already generated a fair few column inches. Although she has always put her music first, the marketing people quickly picked up on the fact that Emma is very photogenic as well as talented. She attracted plenty of new admirers with her frequent appearances in lad's mags, and a brief relationship with Chris Jones also unintentionally got her plenty of media attention. The stage was set for her big solo breakthrough.

The Emma Dale era[edit | edit source]

Things really kicked off in a big way with the release of "S.E.X.Y." - an addictively catchy dance/pop track which saw Emma use her looks to great effect in its accompanying video. The song flew to #1 in August 2003, and a week later Emma's solo album Emma Dale also went top three. The success was overshadowed somewhat when her boyfriend Kit Stance of ex.one was kidnapped - but Emma came out smiling when the couple became engaged after Kit was found and recovered from the ordeal. She was also invited to live with the rest of ex.one, becoming part of the biggest family in pop!

Things stalled a little for Emma when her next release "Dance With Me" reached number ten, but she was soon back on top with the December 2003 single "Someone Switched A Light Off/Hakuna Matata". Emma now had more solo chart toppers than she'd managed with Vulpes, but she still stuck to her promise to return to the band in 2004, and together they had several more hits that year.

As well as all that, she found time to marry Kit, the love of her life, on January 16, 2004. Many people expected their relationship would fall flat but Emma insisted that they were soul mates and vowed to stay faithful to her husband no matter what.

Following a successful duet with Tasha, "Fashion Victim", Emma released "Don't Screw With Me" in April 2004. This song was inspired by her first relationship as a teenager, when Emma had her heartbroken by a lad who took her virginity for the sake of a bet. It took her a long time to get over that and regain her trust in men, but it made for a very powerful song and the public lapped it up - in its second week out, the single climbed to the number one spot.

The Autobiography era[edit | edit source]

How to follow that up? Well, Emma has always believed in having total control over music, and also in writing songs that mean a great deal to her. That was very obvious in her second album Autobiography, which has spawned five top ten hits including a duet with teen sensation Riley Hart. "Peach Flavoured Kisses" once again proved Emma's ability to release catchy pop-rock tracks, whilst "Drowning" showed her more vulnerable side and has become a big favourite at her concerts.

The Beautifully Erotic era[edit | edit source]

At the Urapopstar Awards 10 ceremony, Emma Brown unveiled a sexier image and premiered her comeback single "Cold Shower", the first to be taken from her third album Beautifully Erotic. Fans loved Emma's sexy new image, and they sure proved it when "Cold Shower" helped put her back in the top spot for the first time since early 2004. The album, which featured a "beautiful" half with catchy pop-rock songs and meaningful ballads, as well as the "erotic" half with "Emma purring and moaning her way through the musical equivalent of pornography", also was a chart-topping success. This was quickly followed by the duet with Russ Hooch, "Body's Best Bet", which also reached #1.

But much like 2003's "Dance With Me", the next single "Alison" would be a dramatic misstep following a #1 single. The heartbreaking ballad about a girl who gets involved in a relationship with a classmate until his friends start teasing her, the single was greatly overshadowed due to poor promotion and ended up peaking at #10.

Making up for it, however, was the follow-up "Miss Take". In a promotional period which saw Emma leaving long-time boyfriend Tom Owen for Tom Fletcher, despite losing friends as a result of her actions she managed to rebound from the last single's disappointments when "Miss Take" charted at #3. This was quickly followed by a double A-side of "Ace Reject/Beautifully Erotic", which had been widely predicted to enter the charts at #1 but settled for a #4 entry instead; it did reach #1, though - in its third chart week, only the second single to do so.

The present[edit | edit source]

In spite of many previous successes, Emma Brown has been hit or miss over the last few months. In October 2006, she released the greatest hits album Never A Miss Take: The Greatest Hits and its lead single "Sex Toy", both of which were very successful. But it all went downhill from there. A collaboration with Lemon Cosmos missed the top 20 in its first week and peaked at #12, becoming her first single to miss the top 10. A Christmas release did even worse; with no intentions of canceling, Emma made the wrong move by staying extremely low key during its promotion and the single did not chart inside the top 40 at all.

On July 16, 2007, Emma released a new single called "Exceptional", which brought her back into the top 10.

In January 2009, Vulpes announced they will reform for a new album set for release in the coming months. The reunion never happened, and instead Emma revived her solo career; the first single release from her forthcoming album, her first on Wired Records, was entitled I Will Be, and it brought her back to the top 10 for the first time in two years.
