Biography[edit | edit source]

PSJ originated from humble beginnings in the dirt poor country of Bosnia in the 2000's. The original group formed as a trio, with Karolina Corovic, Mervana Dukic as the vocalists, and Dewonder Davies (real name: Dragana Mircic) as the rapper and DJ. All three girls are of Serbian descent, and lived through the Yugoslav wars that plagued the area in the late 1990's. In fact, many of the group's early songs reflect their upbringing in the violent Republika Sprska area of Bosnia, and is said to have given them the "street cred" they need to be a hip-hop group. The original name of the group was "Princess Shobejam", which would later be shortened to "PSJ" after the release of their first single. "Shobejam" is some kind of bizarre Bosnian hip-hop slang, and since it's incomprehensible to english speakers, the group found it best to change their name. After forming sometime in the early 2000's, the group relocated to London in 2004 in order to further their music career. After getting their start singing in dingy back alley clubs, they were discovered by pop star Malena while performing during a sex club orgy. She immediately signed the group to her Tigerstar Records label. The group debuted their first single, Take Off Your Shirt in June 2005, and it immediately became a runaway hit. The single became critically acclaimed almost immediately for its combination of soulful vocals, hot beats, and an excellent rap from Dewonder. Upon its release in July 2005, the single debuted at #3 on the UK charts, which fueled anticipation for a full album from the group. The group then completed its first album, Livin' Like A G... The Ghetto Story of PSJ shortly after. In October 2005, the group's second single, Blackpool Rock was released and it was also another top 5 hit, reaching #4. The album was released to immediate acclaim and reached #3 on the charts, and would end up being certified platinum for sales of over 300,000 copies. Just weeks after the release of the second single, the girls featured on ghetto star Robin's #1 hit single, Actin' Like A G. Karolina and Mervana sang back-up vocals, and Dewonder rapped a verse in the infamous song. One more single was released from the album, He Haunts My Heart, which was double-A sided with a brand new song, Clueless, which was written by pop star IVY. The group returned in early 2006 for a new single, entitled Bigger Guns which was written by superstar lesbo Alesha. This single also featured a brand new member of the group, Suncica, who was also a childhood friend of the girls. After failing to make it in Uraps Idol, they allowed her to join the group. The new single was seen as a much more rougher song from the group, with a minimal melody and a lo-fi sound. The group had high hopes for the single, and after a positive response, they hoped for a return to the top 3 success they experienced with their first single. In the end, the single charted at #6 which greatly disappointed the group, especially after they charted lower than Olivia Dimuzio whom the group felt did much less quality promotion. However, the group did announce plans to release a new album in early 2007. Unfortunately, the group was experiencing a bad writer's block, and was not satisfied with the material they had been working on, so the sessions were shelved, although a few demos leaked online. In late 2006 it was announced that the group would be taking part in the 2nd Uraps tango challenge. They ended up being paired with Dalisay. The pairing was highly anticipated, as both acts were thought to be a strong match. The song chosen by the pairing was Saving Myself For You, a seemingly delightful crunk/pop tune that was written by the PSJ girls. However, the song was poorly received by critics and fans, and neither singer's record labels wanted to give much promotion to it. As a result, the single was a total flop for both parties involved, only charting at #23 on the official charts. Once again, many months went by before any news appeared from the PSJ girls. Finally, in January 2008, the group announced a new single, entitled Talkin' Bout Us, featuring an appearance from rapper Latavia. They also announced a new album, entitled Tha PimpZtress Album, and have promised a more hardcore hip-hop/crunk sound, compared to some of their more pop-oriented earlier releases. The single and album are scheduled to be released on March 24th and March 31st respectively.
