"Politically Correct" is the debut single by American industrial pop-rock singer Amy-Jayne, released in the UK on March 24th, 2014. A targeted promotional TV ad campaign proved majorly successful when the single cracked the top 3 on the UK singles chart upon debut, with additional top 5 peaks on the digital and airplay charts. The single has spent six weeks in the top 20 to date, and is certified Gold.

Background[edit | edit source]

Amy-Jayne wrote "Politically Correct" in 2014 about partying without a care; a song very much in line with her public persona. She worked with producer RedOne to bring her musical vision to life. She made her introduction to the public in late February, revealing her stylistic direction and her persona as she began networking within the industry. Attention was quick to follow Amy with tabloid gossip about drunk partying, an explicit debut video (later proven to be mere rumour) and management firings, which Amy met with a brash kiss-off. During her networking, Amy met L.E.X with whom she would later collaborate on her second single, when she walked in a fashion show with L.E.X's model wife. Her promotional efforts caught the attention of Dresden & Bareilles, who signed her to their label Blacklight Records shortly after the single's release.

Reception[edit | edit source]

"Politically Correct" was met with a widespread positive acclaim for its irreverent lyrics and bountiful attitude, but its excessive use of expletives prompted a clean edit to make the single accessible for radio airplay. Buzz for the single was built up over the time with a number of TV spots promoting the single, which added to the hype Amy generated as she increased her profile in the media. Particular attention was drawn by the fact that three Amys would be releasing against each other - Amy-Jayne, Amy Marshall and Aimee Lyons. The attention and interest helped the single exceed expectations upon release when it vaulted into the upper end of the chart to become the second-highest entry of its week. The single has also enjoyed favourable reception on the digital chart, and on airplay where it also cracked the top end of the chart due to sustained hype from its sales success.

Music Video[edit | edit source]

The "Politically Correct" video is a visual effects-heavy and high-budget piece, featuring Amy-Jayne in a number of different scenes. Her hair is coloured in contrasting shades of black and white, and she wears a number of different outfits in various scenes. Parts of the video feature mannequins being destroyed amid striking gothic imagery. There is no recurring storyline throughout the video, it is mainly focused on the imagery of all the different scenes.

Chart Performance[edit | edit source]

Initial expectations for the single were a top 10 debut, given strong competition from Aimee Lyons, Amy Marshall and Persephone, each of which are established artists with a track record for major success. It was a surprise to all when "Politically Correct" blasted onto the chart at #3 ahead of Amy Marshall and Persephone. This made Amy-Jayne the second-highest debut of her week, with a massive debut hit to her name. Thanks to a major sales boom on Tango Challenge week, "Politically Correct" enjoyed its greatest sales frame in its second week on chart, despite dropping down to #9. The single has spent 6 weeks in the top 20 to date, and is certified Gold for sales exceeding 225k copies. In its second week on the digital chart, "Politically Correct" peaked at #5. So far it has charted for 5 weeks on the digital chart and has sold 81k in digital copies. The single took a little more time to catch on with radio, but in mid-April it reached a peak of #4.
