Putanovska Librianna Ratsvetaeva, née Jones (born 17 April, 1982) is a Russian pop recording artist, dancer, model, actress, and director. She is one of the most prominent female singers of the 2000s. In 2004, Putanovska made her debut as a recording artist and has achieved commercial success and critical acclaim in the entertainment industry. She is commonly referred to as Puttys and Puta. She is known for reinventing both her music and image, and for maintaining her autonomy within the recording industry. Various music critics have acclaimed her musical productions, which have generated much controversy, particularly in her native Russia.

Born and raised in the slums of Moscow, Russian SFSR, Putanovska moved to Paris as a teenager where she survived by completing various amateur modeling jobs, and later to New York City in 2003 with the intent to begin a music career. She ultimately signed a three-album recording contract with Island Records after auditioning for its then-president. Later in 2004, Putanovska rose to fame with the release of her debut album Simply Puttys and its follow-ups Extravaganza (2005) and Fierce & Working It: Chic (2007), which charted at #1 of the US Billboard Hot 200 and respectively produced the singles "Let's Get High", "In The Middle Of The Storm", and "Glitter Lust".

She assumed greater creative control for her fourth studio album I, Whore (2008) and adopted a public image as a sex symbol while reinventing her music. It's successful lead single "Bitch In Heat" became an international breakthrough in her career, as she won her first Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2009. She followed it with a series of commercially and critically successful albums, including The Glitterati (2009) and Putanovska's The Black Sea (2010). Since the late-2000s, she has been recognized as a pop icon. Throughout her career, Putanovska has released many successful singles, including "You Are A Saint", "Stilettos", "Make-Up Sex", "The Glitterati", "The Black Sea", and "Adonis". With sales exceeding 230 million records worldwide, Putanovska is one of the best-selling artists of all time. Among numerous awards and accolades, Putanovska has won eight Grammy Awards, four Urapopstar Awards, twelve American Music Awards, twelve Billboard Music Awards, and the MTV Legend Award at the MTV Russia Music Awards of 2015. Putanovska's popularity has been further enhanced by various roles in television and film throughout her career, notably starring in the Academy Award-winning Prime Cut.

Outside of music, her other ventures include a successful line of fragrances, as well as various brand endorsements. Forbes magazine ranked her as the fourth most powerful celebrity of 2010, and was named one of Time's "100 Most Influential People In The World" later that year. Since 2011, she is recognized as the highest-selling Russian artist of all time, with two of her studio albums being among the top ten best selling albums of all time in the Russian Federation. As one of the world's most famous public figures, Putanovska's highly publicized personal life, coupled with her successful career and exotic looks, have made her a staple of popular culture.

Biography[edit | edit source]

1982—2003: Childhood and discovery[edit | edit source]

Putanovska was born on April 17 in a low-income neighborhood located in the central district of Moscow, Russia. She is the daughter of Boris Ratsvetaeva, a contractor and Minskah Ratsvetaeva, a hair stylist. Two of her younger sisters, Jelena and Rozalina, eventually ventured into music as the Neo Chicks. Putanovska was raised in a Russian Orthodox Christian household, but was also exposed to Islam. At the age of six, Putanovska learned how to play the piano and took ballet classes regularly. She attended an Orthodox Christian school, St. Philaret Orthodox Institution, where she met her best friend Nikolai Panin, a homosexual boy whom she describes as the "sister she always preferred." Panin would later become Putanovska's personal assistant (before passing away due to AIDS-related complications in mid 2005, in the midst of her commercial breakthrough) and the two of them would eventually be constantly subjected to amorous rumors. Both of her parents worked, making her the head of the household until she was nine years old, when her father left Minskah for his secretary and moved to St. Petersburg. He later had another child, a son who would undergo a sex change and become the singer Bichastasia. Shortly after her tenth birthday, Putanovska left Moscow, and later Russia altogether, searching for "a better life".

In the summer of 2000, Putanovska began working odd jobs waiting tables and helping out her mother at her hair salon before she turned to prostitution. "I did it out of necessity", she later declared to Interview Magazine in 2009, "but then I realized I had a sort of knack for that kind of lifestyle. I wouldn't be [famous] if it wasn't for [her pimp]".

Putanovska's big break came while working at a strip club in The Bronx in 1992 at the age of ten. A scout from Manhattan's Wilhelmina Models approached Putanovska and asked her if she was interested in joining the agency. She gained fame as a fashion model and glorified prostitute, as well as dating Michael Jackson for two years and giving him three children. In 1998, Putanovska was banned from entering a number of Western countries after exposing herself to a minor. Putanovska subsequently became the mistress to two of the world's most powerful men, the late Pope John Paul II and Vladimir Putin.

2004—2005: Early career[edit | edit source]

Putanovska set out to ignite a successful career as a recording artist. She was signed to LeChatarre Records, where she amazed the producers with her high vocal ranges. She was contracted to a 2-album record deal with the company. In the summer of 2004, Putanovska's debut single, "I.O.U.", was released. The song failed to chart worldwide, except for Russia, where it charted at numbe 38 for two weeks. LeChatarre quickly cancelled her deal and kicked her to the curb.

Putanovska was far from being devastated, using Putin's resources to fund her own record label, E&P Records. Her debut album Simply Puttys charted in the top ten in the UK and at number two in the US. Her second single, "LA LA LA", charted at number twelve in the United Kingdom and cracked the top five in the United States and Russia. Putanovska was delighted with the single's success and labelled "one to watch" by the press. Simply Puttys also spawned her first UK top ten "Diva/Vogue", which brought her worldwide recognition, and her first top five "Let's Get High".

Shortly after her rise to prominence, Putanovska married superstar Chris Jones. The pair duetted on the top ten single "My Heart Wouldn't Beat Without You". Months later, they surprised the world by announcing that Putanovska was expecting twins, a boy and a girl. Shortly after Paris Alexander and Helga Lucreacia were born, Putanovska's marriage started to decline. She filed for divorce, took the children to Moscow, and denied Chris as their father. In 2006, Putanovska exchanged the children for a Balenciaga handbag.

Putanovska released her second album, Extravaganza, in August 2005. It charted at number five in over 20 countries including the UK, and at number one in 26 additional countries. The album sold over 9 million copies in the US. The lead single, "In The Middle Of The Storm" became Putanovska's second consecutive top five single in the UK. Only one more single was released from Extravaganza. "You Are A Saint" saw its debut at number seven, which caused Putanovska to fall into a state of depression and so she decided to stop releasing singles from the album. After the release of "You Are A Saint", Putanovska disappeared from the public eye.

2006—2008: Commercial success[edit | edit source]

In October 2006, Putanovska returned to release her third studio album. Fierce & Working It: Chic and the lead single "Glitter Lust" barely cracked the charts, due to a severe lack of promotion. The album sold less than 1 million copies worldwide. Putanovska went missing in action once more. The National Enquirer has suggested that Putanovska was in Brazil, receiving a labiaplasty to reshape her labia majora after childbirth. A hoodectomy was allegedly performed at the same time, which exposes the clitoris in an attempt to increase sexual stimulation.

Putanovska returned in 2007 with her comeback single, an AA-side of "2 Die 4" and a reissue of "Glitter Lust". Released in April 2009, the single returned Putanovska to the top five for the first time in two years. A reissue of Fierce & Working It: Chic helped the album to reach a new peak position of number four. The next single, the cult classic "Stilettos", failed to achieve the same success when ti charted miserably at number eleven in the UK. It failed to enter the top 30 in a number of countries, only finding success on Billboard's Hot Hip-Hop Songs in the US. Putanovska took a small "break" to make important decisions regarding her career.

The next single was decided to be "Kill From The Rear", which features Putanovska's long-time friend Alesha Kurdadze. However, just days after announcing the single, Putanovska cancelled the release. She had been working on new material and released a surprise new single. "Bitch In Heat" sparked controversy and excitement throughout the media and Putanovska's fan base. The single saw her take on a new more mature, lustier sound, described by the singer herself as "crunktronica". Much of the song's hype was driven by its heavy sexual content, with many praising it for being "Putanovska's filthiest single yet". The original version of the song contains a rap verse from Shell Ruin; Alesha also contributed her own remix with new vocals. The single became Putanovska's first number one single in the UK and became her first international number one in 39 months. Putanovska's fourth album I, Whore performed similarly well, exploring her new sound.

Shortly afterwards, Putanovska met newcomer Ryan Dawson through Alesha. He swiftly proposed marriage to Putanovska in September 2007. They soon eloped. The pair released a duet, "Make-Up Sex", sung from the point of view of a feuding couple who give in to their urges and have make-up sex. The single claimed the top spot around the world, becoming Putanovska's second UK number one, and Ryan's first. The single spent four weeks in the top three. After learning that Dawson had engaged in extramarital affairs with the Trendy Pop Boys, most notably Jack Stevens, Putanovska filed for divorce. Later on, the two reconciled and are currently back together in an "open relationship".

Putanovska finally released a collaboration with Alesha as her next single. The pair released the "Diamonds & Dollar Bills" EP, which included two new songs and duet versions of two songs from I, Whore. The pair performed "Diamonds & Dollars" at the 15th Urapopstar Awards; the duet was nominated for Best Collaboration at the 16th show. It became Putanovska's third consecutive number one single; it was followed by yet another chart-topper "Intoxicated Girls & Chemical Boys". I, Whore spawned one final single — "Automatic/Skyscraper", which also charted within the top three.

2009—present: Career development[edit | edit source]

In 2009, Putanovska released the long-awaited follow-up to I, Whore, the critically acclaimed The Glitterati. Working with Alesha and Shell Ruin, the album elaborated on Putanovska's sexualised repertoire while experimenting with new sounds and themes also. There are songs referencing domestic violence and loneliness. Despite the underperformance of the title track upon its release, the album and "Worship Me (Song 4 Putanovska)" (written and produced by Alesha and Ruin) charted within the top ten. Putanovska also embarked on the highly successful Friendship Bracelet Tour.

Putanovska released a new single entitled "Mexico", intended to be taken from her first greatest hits compilation. Although the greatest hits never came to fruition, "Mexico" was a top five hit and her biggest hit since "Automatic/Skyscraper". She also embarked on a worldwide stadium tour, The Reckoning, with Alesha. The tour reached a number of stadiums across the globe, causing a media frenzy and a worldwide phenomenon. The record-shattering tour was met with widespread acclaim. The tour garnered a total of US$251 million after just 45 shows.

Later that year, Putanovska announced plans to return with a new album, a rock opera entitled Putanovska's The Black Sea. Inspired by occultism, the album was Putanovska's most artistic and daring yet. The album and its lead single, "The Black Sea" charted at number one, becoming Putanovska's most successful efforts in two years. Three weeks later, "Insanity/Young Blood" was announced as the album's second single, a collaboration with Indigo Peak. The single will be released to the highly competitive Christmas chart at the end of 2010.
