SHY are an Urban, R'n B group, who consist of members Aisha La'Verne, Thalia Bennett and Laya Ricards. By 2010, SHY boasted 7,000,000 in album & singles sold world wide.

History[edit | edit source]

2003 - 04: Formation and Circles[edit | edit source]

Forming in 2003, SHY consisted of 4 members Taryn Bennett, Thalia Bennett and Aisha La'Verne. (The 4th member of SHY was never named) all girls were talented and gifted singers and rappers, who used to busk on the streets and enter local talent quests. During the winter of 2003, all three girls were introduced to a label boss at Roc Nation and signed the same day. The girls went into the studio immediately and by summer had a full album ready for release.

In the summer of 2004 "She Got Game/Dumb" was released world wide on the 4/7/04, taking both a warm response in the U.S and U.K, entering at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #16 on the U.K charts respectively. The girls career's began to skyrocket in America and to ensure more success in the U.K were based there for a few months and during the release of their second single "Kick Him to The Kerb" ft. MC Labels was released 10/10/04 entering #14 on the Billboard hot 100 and #20 in the U.K charts.

2005 & Hiatus[edit | edit source]

As the new year arrived, rumours began to circulate that Taryn Bennett had quit the group, due to the strain of working away from home. It was later revealed the singer had become pregnant and had resigned, due to this reason

Kenya Stone was drafted into the line up to replace Taryn and immediatly went into the studio to lay down vocals for a re-recorded version of the album "Circles" a new single was also planned for the group with Kenya, however it was rumoured Thalia wasn't happy about the line up change and her crumbling relationship with Fifth Element singer Cody Case, placing the group onto an indefinite hiatus.

2006 - 08: Ain't It Funny and Third Line-up[edit | edit source]

In late 2006, Aisha La'Verne made contact with both Taryn and Thalia with plans on igniting SHY again, Taryn declined the oppertunity, while Thalia admitted to not being keen to begin with. She eventually agreed to rejoin later on. Kenya was not asked to rejoin the line up. Among all the negotiations to kick start their career, Aisha and Thalia parted ways with their management team (responsible for stars Fifth Element & Ivy)

Early 2007 saw the Aisha and Thalia joined bya new member, Laya Richards and announce their comeback. Singer Ivy penned a song for the girls called "Ride With Me" however, due to issues within the group, promotion was limited and the single did poorly, charting at a low 25 on the charts and even worse on the billboard hot 100. The girls geared up for promotion of their next single "Nightwalker", which gave the girls their first top 10 inside the UK and saw them back into the top 10 of the billboard hot 100.

By November a third single and the album were ready for release. Nightwalker was released on the 11/11/07, followed by the album a week later. Nightwalker didn't generate as much hype as it's predecessor and only enter the charts at #11, however, their album came at more critical acclaim and saw the girls hit #6 with their album "Ain't It Funny"

The last single from the album was "Gangster Boy" which was released in the summer of 2008 and didn't live up to much hype at all, charting at #18.

The girls took the rest of the year off and headed back into the studio to record new material. The song "I'll Show You" was recorded and the girls went back to work toward the winter of 2008 beginning of 2009. The song ended up being a huge hit for the girls, charting in at #7, proving their fan base had grown. Unfortunately, the single would be the last to be released by SHY.

2009 - Split[edit | edit source]

In mid 2009, just hours before the trio announced plans for their new single and album, Aisha La'Verne released this statement, via social media:

"Due to the fact that too much unreliability, trust issues and poor communication, I've made decision to leave SHY. This comes after much deliberation, but working with two people who do not share the same visions as I do has become too much to bare. I wish both Thalia and Laya luck on what they decide to do."'

It was later revealed Aisha had become fed up with Thalia's erratic behaviour, when a messy, nasty argument ensued, causing Aisha to quit. Thalia never confirmed this story from Aisha, however former member Laya has backed Aisha on these claims.

Thalia and Laya carried on as a duo for the remainder of 2009 to mid 2010, while in the process of auditioning a new member, Thalia released this statement Via SHY's official website:

"Aisha and I worked very closely, together for the past 7 years and after extensive auditions to have a new member join, I felt it would be wrong to try write Aisha out. Instead, after talking it over between myself, Laya and our management, we've decided it'd be best if we were not to continue on. We'd like to thank our fans over the years and apologize for this abrupt ending, however one day we may return, although I'm doubtful."

Rumours had spread that Thalia had talked herself an exclusive record deal with Wired Records, the latter of which turned out to be true.

2015: Reformation[edit | edit source]

After 6 years away from the group, both Aisha and Thalia sat down and talked out their differences. Both parties concurred that they wanted to rejoin the group to release new music in 2015.

On Saturday 25th of April 2015, while member Thalia performed at London's G A Y Nightclub, she was joined on stage by Aisha and Laya. The trio confirmed the up-coming single Suburbia Streets.

After a a small promotional tour around the UK, their comeback was successful, the single Suburbia Streets entered the charts at #3, their highest position ever, as well as being the most downloaded single in the UK.

Line-up changes[edit | edit source]

Many of the groups problems came from their inability to keep a single line-up for a long period of time.

2003-04[edit | edit source]

The group started originally started out with 4 members, however before the girls released publicly the 4th member walked. Her identity was never disclosed. The line up consisted of Thalia Bennett, Aisha La'Verne and Taryn Bennett. It would be Taryn to cause the first line up change, leaving to become a mother in the new year of 2004.

2004-05[edit | edit source]

This would be the second line up of SHY and in fact the least successful. Although new member Kenya Stone would re-record old singles and the current album with the girls the whole project was shelved after Thalia placed the band on a hiatus in 2005, after discovering she was pregnant. No single or album was released with Kenya, in fact she only filled in for public appearances.

2006 - 2010[edit | edit source]

This would become the third line up change of the group and the most successful with 3 top ten hits and album. Laya Richards would become SHY's new member after Kenya was not asked to rejoin the group. While being the most successful version of SHY it was the most troubled plagued with Thalia becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol, becoming a home wrecker and ended up in jail. Aisha would eventually leave the band in 2009, while Thalia and Laya continued on until 2010 without a replacement. A new member was hired to fill Aisha's place, however after much deliberation Thalia would leave the band in 2010, causing the official SHY split.

2015 - Present[edit | edit source]

In early 2015 Aisha, Thalia and Laya all came back together to release another record. Their first release "Suburbia Streets" will be released 8.06.15.
