"80s Bomb" is a download only release from British recording artist Dakota Prescott. Although not an official single, the track was released as the first of Dakota's 'buzz' singles in order to gain interest and gather a fan following. The song was written by the singer herself. The song was nominated for "Best Digital Release" at the Urapopstar Awards 27.
Background[edit | edit source]
On 09 April 2015, NME introduced Dakota Prescott to the world, describing her as 'the new face of pop'. They revealed they'd heard two of her songs, one of which was "80s Bomb" and described it as distinctive and fresh sounding.
On 15 April, Dakota revealed that before releasing an official single, she would be releasing several promotional singles first, exclusive to the download chart. The first of these was revealed to be "80s Bomb". Dakota stated "My debut album has no release date planned at all. It's not even finished. We've got enough tracks to make an album with, but I'm not sure if all the material is the right sound for me or even strong enough" Dakota explained to Rolling Stones. "So basically the plan is I'm just going to chuck some buzz promo singles out there for the Digital chart to see what works and what doesn't. Songs that are a hit can make the album, songs that don't do so well... I'll just bin them." ... "It's a track called "80s Bomb" and I'm releasing it on 27th April. It's just basically a song about my love of the 80s and how I wish I had been around then. It's not one of my favourite songs I've recorded, but the label want to test it with the public first."
Release and reception[edit | edit source]
Before the release of the single, a fire led to the loss of the song, leading to Dakota having to re-record the track, meaning the release date of the track was pushed back twice, eventually settling on a new release date of 11 May 2015.
On 08 May 2015, Dakota premièred the single.
Music video[edit | edit source]
The music video premièred on 12 May 2015 on Dakota's official Vevo page.
The video, just like the song, is very 80s inspired. It features many different layers and effects on top of the video creating a nostalgic 80s feel. The scenes consist of Dakota singing the song, walking and dancing with wolves, dancing on top of a pier, with various shots of settings such as beaches and city walks, something which heavily references the opening sequences for 80's TV series, such as Miami Vice. The video has a witch house vibe.
