Ain't Got Shit is a song written by Bella-May and produced by Calvin Harris and DJ Frank E and was taken as the first single from Bella's third studio album Ready or Not. The track was released on February 25th 2013. Ready or Not was due to be released alongside "Ain't Got Shit" but due to the lukewarm reception the single was receiving, the album release was postponed until autumn 2013.
On March 3rd 2013, the single officially debuted at #8 on the UK singles chart, selling 49,731 copies in it's first week. A week later, it rose to a new peak of #5 and was eventually certified gold.
Background[edit | edit source]
Bella's comeback was cryptically revealed on Bella's official website on Monday February 11th 2013, with a teaser lyric from the single and the words "2 Days to Go". The next day, the image changed and another lyric from the track was revealed with the text "1 Day to Go". On Wednesday February 13th 2013, Bella's official website re-launched and gave details about the new single. Her website exclusively revealed that the single will have Bella making her rapping debut.
Promotion[edit | edit source]
Bella promoted the single on Loose Women, This Morning, G-A-Y and. Her performance at G-A-Y was halted momentarily after a spotlight fell down and crashed onto the stage. Bella continued to perform though, like a natural. Afterwards she told press: "Omg I was just like... OMG. Did someone just die? What is that? I stared in awe and then I realized that the show must go on!"
Bella also promoted the single online via her Twitter, Facebook & Tumblr accounts, encouraging fans to buy the single. There was a competition on all these networking sites to make your own "Ain't Got Shit" music video. The winning video won a chance to meet Bella-May and be given Bella-May's entire back catalogue, signed. The winning video would be played on Bella's official website for 24 hours.
Critical Reception[edit | edit source]
When the track premiered on BBC Radio 1 on February 17th 2013, radio presenter Fearne Cotton was heard saying afterwards: "What the hell was that? Are we actually allowed to play that? What?". The track did not fare was well as Bella's previous singles on Radio 1 and only made the C-List.
Popjustice listed the track as their Song of the Day, citing it as being "refreshing" and "something pop is needing right now", but advised Bella to ditch the rapping on future records, or to get a guest rapper on if needs be.
Adele DeWitt of DIVA Magazine, gave the song a 5 star review saying: "Bella-May used to be everyone's guilty pleasure. This song will take the "guilty" away from that! Amazing, amazing track"
Digital Spy criticized the song, calling it "effortless, and not in a good way". They claimed that Bella was trying to alienate her loyal fan-base my releasing something so urban and un-chart friendly. They also slammed the controversial lyric "But I was like 'Keep or Delete it?' / So I got rid of that fetus" (referring to the time Bella had an abortion in her early teens). They called the lyric "tasteless" and "insulting" and said Bella should be ashamed for glamorizing something that is sensitive to lots of people.
Music Video[edit | edit source]
The music video for "Ain't Got Shit" was directed by Trudy Bellinger and premiered on UK music channel The Box on February 17th 2013.
The music video takes place at a neon glow paint party, strictly over 21's. There is shown to be lots of sexual intercourse (both straight and gay) as well as dancing and lots of alcohol consumption.
Bella is seen throughout the video killing people. She poisons a man, snaps the neck of a woman, pushes another woman off of a high balcony, cuts the throat of a man she was seen seducing earlier in the video and when a blonde-haired woman bends over, Bella quickly shoves a pool cue up her behind.
Other scenes include shots of party goers and Bella singing to the camera.
The video ends with the police arriving. Bella shoots them all at the video concludes with her standing in an ocean of colorful bodies, her hands on her hips and a smirk on her face.
