"Be My Girl" is an unreleased single by Italian-American singer Alexei Monaghan, the follow-up to the US top 5 smash hit "Lightning Rod". It was to be the second single from Alexei's shelved pop-punk album "The Alexhibition", but was scrapped after Geffen was displeased with Alexei's unprofessional conduct, and the single was ignored by radio and the public due to extensive negative press. Alexei would not enjoy success in the industry again until 2008 when he would revive his career as one-fifth of Phoenix Rising.

Background[edit | edit source]

"Be My Girl" was written by Alexei in 2000 for inclusion on his debut solo album "The Alexhibition", and was picked out by Geffen Records to be his next single following the success of "Lightning Rod". The song was again produced by John Feldmann, and was to be the single that his album was to be launched off of. Alexei, however, angered the label by becoming demanding and un-cooperative, as well as inciting negative press as an excessive party boy and drug abuser. His behavior destroyed his professional reputation within the industry and with the public, leading to the single and album eventually being scrapped and Alexei dropped by the label.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Initial interest in Alexei's further material was high due to the success of his previous single, but after Alexei began making headlines for all the wrong reasons public opinion quickly changed. Consequently, the lyrics to "Be My Girl" were received harshly as "boastful", and fueling Alexei's unlikeable persona. This led to a lack of radio support as interest waned. The poor radio support led to the physical release of the single being scrapped and a video never entering production. Alexei continued to make headlines after reacting negatively to the scuttled plans, publically badmouthing the label which led Geffen to drop him and shelve the album.
