"Black Widow Sting" is a song written by British pop singer Romo for American pop singer Amy Marshall, which will appear on her fifth studio album Broken Angel. The song was later popularized through a cover version by Australian dance-pop vocalist Veronica Nightshade.

Romo wrote "Black Widow Sting" with the intention of it being released as the lead single from Amy's album in February 2011, but despite a few solid weeks of promotion, the single was canceled, although it did manage to reach #20 on the download charts. As a result, Romo sold the song to Veronica Nightshade, who released a cover version on her album 60 Days Of Night in 2011. Veronica's version of "Black Widow Sting" was released as a single in June 2011 and reached the top 5.

Amy Marshall version[edit | edit source]

Amy Marshall took an extended hiatus after releasing a greatest hits album and a collaboration single with Romo, a longtime friend whose musical career began when she sang backup on her early tours. She planned a one-off single for August 2010 that ultimately was canceled, but left the door open for a future return. During promotion of Reincarnation, Amy split with Katrina Regalna from Horrorfilm Horizon, the band which had inspired her to experiment with electropop music on that album; at the same time, electropop began to fall out of favor with major stars who opted to take a more experimental direction on future releases.

Romo, who wrote and co-produced "Black Widow Sting", said she wanted Amy to return with a song that brought her back to the Morbid Lullabies era, which she described as "sinister, yet hooky and radio-friendly". "Black Widow Sting" marked Romo's eighth collaboration with Amy; she wrote or co-wrote six of the 12 tracks on Reincarnation, as well as co-writing and contributing guest vocals to "Game Over!"

According to Romo, "Black Widow Sting" is about a woman in an abusive relationship who decides to stay with her boyfriend because she needs company by her side. Amy noted the dark concept harks back to Morbid Lullabies, as that album featured songs about "suicide, depression, and the fainting game".

Amy canceled the full release of the single for unknown reasons, but the song did manage to chart at #20 on downloads. Her version was eventually released on her Broken Angel album, although the song's dark electro-grunge tones stand in contrast to the album's overall pure pop sound.

After Amy canceled plans to release the single, Romo shopped "Black Widow Sting" to other acts. She later announced Australian dance-pop vocalist Veronica Nightshade would cover it.

Veronica's version of "Black Widow Sting", produced by New York-based DJ Tracy Young, appears on her album 60 Days Of Night. It was released as a single on June 20, 2011, debuting at #8 on the singles charts and climbing to #5 the following week.
