Bre Washington (born Brittany Tenitra Mowry, February 15, 1980) is a British singer best known as one third of R&B girl group Moodring.
Early life[edit | edit source]
Bre was born in Ealing, London to her father Raymond and mother Monique. Her Father is of Nigerian descent and grew up in the USA before moving to London in the 70s, whilst her Mother is of both Ghanian and Japanese heritage. Bre has stated that despite being proud of her mixed heritage she sees herself as firmly English due to her traditional upbringing. Bre attented Notting Hill and Ealing High School, the same school as TV presenters Angellica Bell and Konnie Huq.
Bre has stated she had no interest in music until she was 13 when she met her music teacher Robert Washington, who she later married. Despite covering it up at the start of her career, Bre entered a relationship with him at 13. He was 15 years her senior. In 1996, when she was 16 years old she had her first child with him, Raymond D'no (b. August 10, 1996) and the following year they got married. Because of the age of her son, when Moodring came to the public eye, Bre stated she was born in 1976, making her 33 years old in 2009.
Robert encouraged Bre to make music from a young age and she sent demo tapes to local radio stations from the age of 14, never having much luck. In 2001 she graduated from Goldsmiths University, London with a First class BMus degree in Music, and the following year she gave birth to her second child, Angel Lourise (b. April 1, 2002). Bre has stated that the pregnancy was unplanned and it stopped her from training to become a music teacher like her husband.
Moodring[edit | edit source]
Since 2006, Bre had been working as a songwriter for upcoming artists. In September 2008 Bre met 22 year old singer Maria Rose and her friend and fellow songwriter Cassie Garcia whilst working on a song for Maria. The trio clicked and decided to form a group. In April 2009 they released their first single Alive. Maria left the group and Bre had her third child, Chastité Monique (b. October 8, 2009). The group returned in 2010 with new member L'mondrea and became one of the biggest selling girl groups. For more information see: Moodring.
Solo Career[edit | edit source]
Bre has featured on Becca Hayworth's single Stressin' which charted at #11 in 2010. As a solo venture, Bre has been a panelist on Loose Women since 2010, appearing in the lineup once a week.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Bre's parents were in their late 30s who is an only child. Bre has stated about her parents in 2010 "My mother had me just before menopause. They say kids born that late come out funny. I guess I was one of the lucky ones!" Bre's parents are both in their 70s now and Bre has a healthy relationship with them.
In 2010, Bre's husband Robert Washington entered in to a relationship with bandmate L'mondrea's brother G'For. This caused Bre to break down, and whilst trying to sell records with Moodring Bre entered in to a homosexual relationship with Gingers+Jesus member Bronagh O'Toole, daughter of Dakota Rain. This was followed by a civil partnership after Bre divorced Robert, although it was later found out they never married as Just Ginger, Bronagh's aunt, took the ceremony and was not licensed to do so. Bronagh led Bre astray and caused her to get a lot of negative press attention, resulting in the hiatus of Moodring in 2011. Bre stated about the relationship. "I was in a bad place and I just went along with anything. Bronagh offered someone to share my feelings with and I just went along with it. I do have a lot of regrets, but you can't turn back time. Now I am an advocate of the charity Mind along with the rest of Moodring. Some good can come out of my experiences.
Later that year, Robert died in a car crash and his lover G'For killed himself days later. Bre decided to keep the name Washington as her stage name, but legally reverted back to maiden name Mowry. After Robert's death, Bre revealed that he was in fact a paedophile and was having sexual intercourse with Bre since she was 13 years of age, getting her pregnant at 15. Within this revelation she admitted she was born in 1980, making her 30 years old rather than 34. Stating she had covered up her age to protect her late husband
Bre is an atheist, stating she believes in "science, not god", something she is passionate about. She is currently dating Aleksander Ivanenko since January 2013 and living with her three children in Notting Hill. In May 2013 Bre announced she was suffering from Breast Cancer and undergoing treament. This may effect future tour dates.
