CHRIS (born 27th January 1988) is a British singer-songwriter and author.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
CHRIS (real name Chris Evans) was born on January 27th 1988 in the Welsh town of Aberystwyth. He left secondary school in 2004 and started a Performing Arts course at Coleg Meirion Dwyfor, Dolgellau, which he dropped out of in March 2005 when he signed a record deal with blanco y negro.
Music[edit | edit source]
CHRIS first began recording music in his friend's home studio in early 2004. Together they produced a demo tape, which CHRIS sent off to "random record companies". blanco y negro contacted him in November 2004 and offered him a one album record deal.
LOOK BUSY[edit | edit source]
CHRIS' debut album was originally going to be a re-recorded version of the demo tape, however, during the process CHRIS had a creative burst of energy and ended up writing a whole new album. Just two original demo tracks were used on the final version of the album. His first single from the album, Lesson Learnt was released in July and beat all expectations to chart at #9. Spurred on by the single's surprise success, a second single and the album were released in October. The final single from the album was Shiny Things, which was released in January 2006.
MOVING[edit | edit source]
Following the release of CHRIS' first collaborative release, a duet EP with Neyssa called "Fuck Or Die", he was offered a bigger contract with Politik Records. Feeling that many regarded him a "sell-out" in the indie scene after his duet with Neyssa, CHRIS took the offer and signed a new deal with Politik in April 2006. He took with him all the recordings he had done for his second album so far.
HAPPY TRAGIC THING[edit | edit source]
CHRIS' sophomore release was released in May 2006, following the lead single Other Side Of The Mirror, which had become his biggest solo single to date, charting at #6. The album boasted a darker, more stripped down sound than his debut, and was regarded with critical acclaim. The album used up the rest of the demo tracks that were intended for the first album, making the material on it actually older than that on his debut. CHRIS then went on to team up with girl group Innocent in the Summer of 2006, on the double a-side single "Femme Fatale/I Beg Of You". The single hit Top 10 in the charts. This was followed up with The Living Corpse EP, a collection of album tracks and brand new ones, and Cuntagious, both charted neatly in the Top 20 and ended the "Happy Tragic Thing" era.
DETONE[edit | edit source]
On January 1st 2007, CHRIS released Detone: B-sides and Rarities, a collection of b-sides and tracks that didn't make the album. It charted at #9 in the charts, despite not having a single release.
I WAS A TEENAGE SHARK[edit | edit source]
CHRIS was due to release his third album "I Was A Teenage Shark" on April 23rd 2007. However, it was cancelled and scrapped and CHRIS moved labels from Politik to indie Judas Records. On April 26th almost ten tracks from the album were leaked online. CHRIS released the remaining unreleased tracks as an EP, called "The Panther Cage EP" on July 9th.
HELL AND HIGH WATER[edit | edit source]
"Hell And High Water" was CHRIS' real third studio album and was released in July to critical acclaim. It was preceded by the single "Not For You" and contained some of CHRIS' darkest and harshest sounds to date.
LOVE ME OR KILL ME[edit | edit source]
CHRIS' fourth studio album was released quietly with little promotion on 3rd March 2008. Despite the low-key release the album managed to hit Top 10, with its preceding single "Je Suis Un Idiot" staying in the Top 10 for 4 weeks. The album was mostly experimental music, and a project that CHRIS had worked on for a while.
NEW ALBUM[edit | edit source]
CHRIS is working on his fifth studio album, rumoured to be titled "All About Boys". He has said he hopes to release it in "the summer". CHRIS has said to expect it to be "different from the last two and BIG".
WRITING[edit | edit source]
CHRIS debut novel "Skeleton Sky" was released May 2007. It received mixed reviews. He has announced plans for a follow-up novel, "How Crazy Boys Go Crazy", which was originally scheduled for a March 2008 release but was pushed back to May 2008 and now stands to receive a November 2008 release.
