Biography[edit | edit source]
1990–2006: Early life[edit | edit source]
Brittany DeRosa was born on July 3, 1990, the eldest child of Italian American parents Melinda and Giordano DeRosa, in Los Angeles.
When China was five she showed interest in music learning to play the piano by ear at six. She remembers playing her fathers' music which included David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Madonna and Queen.
Her mother commented on China's fascination with Marilyn Monroe; "We joked around calling her mini Marilyn, she just became really fascinated with Marilyn and she was only eight, she'd watch all her movies and play her music all the time. She said one day I'll be this generations Marilyn. We didn't have any problems with her wanting to be a singer, but we said that she should have a back-up. We didn't paint it all pretty we said that not everyone makes it, so you need something to fall back on if you don't succeed."
At 12 she decided to follow in her dads footsteps as a marine biologist, she has a bachelor's degree in Marine Science.
China was described as "gifted and talented" by her teachers, saying that she was a quick learner and her passion for marine biology really helped her graduate quickly. It was all about doing whatever she could, doing it to the best of her ability.
After China graduated she started working on her debut material.
2006-2007: Early life[edit | edit source]
DeRosa started working on her debut material in early 2006, working on various demos before searching for a record label.
She started recording with her stage name China as she got nicknamed China doll by her friends and family. In late 2007 she arrived in the UK, where she was offered a contract with Wired Records if she went top ten.
