Counting The Stars is the second studio album by English alternative rock band Jetfire. It was released on 06 June 2016 through Next Generation Records.
The entire album was written solely by the four band members. Over the course of 2013 into early 2016, Jetfire vanished from the music scene, working for almost four years on the album. The band then officially announced and verified the album in April 2016, two months before "Little Black Book" was released as the lead single.
Upon release, the album received positive reviews from critics. The album was a commercial success, debuting at number one in both the UK and the US, giving Jetfire their first number one album in both countries.
Singles[edit | edit source]
- "Little Black Book" was released June 06, 2016, alongside the album, acting as the lead single. The single became the biggest single of Jetfire's career, hitting #1 on the UK singles, Download and Airplay chart.
- "Tastes of Gin" was released October 17, 2016, as the second single from the album and charted within the top three.
- "Light Em Up" will be released May 29, 2017, as the third single from the album and charted in the top five.
Critical Response[edit | edit source]
The record received mostly positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, the album has an average score of 71 out of 100, which indicates "generally favorable reviews" based on 23 reviews. Writing for Exclaim!, Ian Gormely noted that the band's ambition was perhaps their sole stumbling block, though pursuing all musical avenues makes the result "overstuffed yet frequently brilliant." Matt Collar from AllMusic stated Jetfire were "picking up on many of the stylistic threads running through their self-titled 2012 debut: synthy new wave, kinetic dance-rock, and atmospheric balladry. The difference this time the band's pristine studio execution, marked by a distinctive '80s adult contemporary aesthetic." Other reviewers noted the strong 80's presence here that wasn't present on their debut.
NME called it "Quite possibly the best alternative album of the year". Q magazine stated "several songs such as "Snakes & Ladders" and "Cooler Than Me" would fit perfectly on their debut album, however songs like "Little Black Book" and "Tastes of Gin" were where the band really shone and evolved. Rolling Stone further agreed, calling "Tastes of Gin" everything you'd ever hoped a 2016 Jetfire song would sound like, despite sounding like nothing they've ever done before".
