Dirty Dirty is a single from Moodring, and the first to be released since their contract with Elite began. It was released as the band's 4th single on June 14 2010 and reached #2 in the charts. It has since reached platinum status.
The single, of a hip hop genre, debuted on April 19 2010 to positive reviews. It contains samples of Dirty Dirty by TLC. The video was shot on April 30 and May 3 2010 and premiered on May 9 to positive reviews.
Background[edit | edit source]
Contrasting to the previous singles, Moodring wanted to have a harder, hip hop sound for the next single from the album. Choosing the closest sound to hip hop for the release. Dirty Dirty was supposedly set to be the third single, but it was pushed back for Hey Lady (Why Don't You?). The song samples the song of the same name, originally recorded by TLC, a group all the Moodring members admire. However it is not a cover, as only one line of the original song is repeated in this one.
Release and reception[edit | edit source]
The song received its first official airplay on 19 April 2010, two months in advance of the release. Bre stated in an interview that this is the single that would "sell the album", so they need extra time to promote and familiarise the public with the song, which had positive reviews and was predicted to chart top 10, with some critics slating it in at number one.
Promotion[edit | edit source]
Whilst promoting the single, Moodring decided to strike a promotional deal with L.E.X as he promoted his single Nothing of Me. This involved L.E.X appearing on a radio remix of Dirty Dirty and Moodring appearing on a radio/video remix of Nothing of Me. Although neither song is released as a AA side, both mixes get airplay and were treated as promotional songs. Once Moodring signed to L.E.X's label Elite, a Digital bundle was released where fans of both acts could buy both original songs, radio mixes, and two further exclusive mixes.
Music video[edit | edit source]
The music video for "Dirty Dirty" premiered on 9 May 2010, and rather than telling a story like the previous two, this is focused on the aesthetic appearance of the girls, and includes a lot of water, hot oil and skimpy outfits. Unsurprisingly, this gained the video and the band a lot of attention. The video was one of the most played on channels such as MTV and Kiss for 5 weeks, as was it number one on the airplay charts. Despite the song losing out on the top spot to China's Little Miss Controversy, it has since sold more and had more long term success. Many critics believe the video may have something to do with this.
