"Keepin' U Up" is Elice Claire's second single from her debut album 'Strictly Confidential'. The song was released in March 2009. Popjustice £20 Music Prize short listed the song for the award. In 2011, pop singer Veronica Nightshade released the song as a single.

Song Information[edit | edit source]

"Keepin' U Up" was written and co-produced by Elice Claire. The song also contains productions from Xenomania. According to Elice this is one of those songs which gets you going in the club or when you're getting ready to go to a club. The lyrics content of the song is slightly explicit. The song is about a girl keeping a guy up all night for sex. The song can be compared to Alesha Dixon's "Lets Get Excited", BoA's "Eat You Up" with a tint of Cascada's mix. The song can be classified as an Pop/Dance/R&B crossover.

Promotion[edit | edit source]

Elice and Helena on the cover of RollingStone (April 2009).

Elice Claire performed this song for the first time in her T4 Special 'Strictly Elice' on 30 December 2008. On February 13th, Claire performed "Keepin' U Up" at Friday Night with Jonathan Ross. She is also on tour with Romo this spring. On March 21st Elice Claire performed a special remix of the single on the SAVE URAPS Telethon.
On March 3rd Elice Claire was quoted saying she was taking her song back from Mischa, calling the singer irresponsible and careless for abandoning work and simply disappearing. The song "One Night Only" was re-mastered and added to the CD single of Keepin' U Up.
On March 16th, rumors about Elice Claire, Helena Rossi and Logan Cross being on a sexual triangle surfaced the internet. The three singers however denied all the rumors. A few days after the sexual claims of Cross, Claire and Rossi more rumors surfaced. Gossip Blogs posted photos of Elice Claire and Helena Rossi kissing, claiming that both Rossi and Claire were lesbian lovers. The two denied all the lesbian rumors and posted on their blog that they would be on the cover of the April issue of the US magazine RollingStone. The tempting cover was to mock all the sexual rumors that had surfaced the net about Claire and Rossi being lesbians.

Release and Reception[edit | edit source]

The song had its official radio adds in early March with a full physical release later that month. PopJustice called the song "a R&B dance gold which is guaranteed to get people up and going". Digital Spy surprisingly gave the song 4 out of 5 stars and recalling their negative claim which they made earlier when the album was released. Perez Hilton calls the single pop genius, saying it's the best song Elice Claire has ever done.
The United States received the song a little later than the UK, as the song was not featured on the American edition of the album. The labels planed on re-releasing the album with "Keepin' U Up" and a few more tracks that was not featured on the first pressing of the album, but that did not happen and the single was scrapped in the United States.
As soon as the song had it's premiere in UK radios, it shot right up the airplay charts. The song got a lot of buzz, mostly due to all the controversies surrounding Elice Claire. PopJustice selected the song as their Single Of The Week.

Music Video[edit | edit source]

Elice Claire in the music video for "Keepin' U Up".

The music video for the song was directed by Jake Nava and shot from January 21 and 22, 2009. On February 7th, 2009 it was announced that Jake Nava was having legal issues due to some scenes in the music video being similar to scenes in Rihanna's "SOS" and Kat Deluna's "Unstoppable". A deal was to be settled by February 20th to decide if Jake was going to be allowed to keep the similar scenes or scrap it off. A Deal was reached after February 20th, and unfortunately Nava was not able to keep the scenes, therefore the music video treatment had to be altered which caused a delay. According to Nava many music videos have similarities and nobody makes a big deal out of it. The music video premiered on March 24th on 4Music.
The video starts with Elice in a fashion show. As she is strutting the runway, she spots a sexy guy in the crowd. Throughout the whole show, Elice tries to grab the guy's attention by lifting up her mini skirt and doing erotic moves in the runway. In the end of the fashion show, she seeks for the guy, but he's already gone. The following night as Elice is partying with her friends at a club, she sees the same guy from the previous night, she starts a conversation with him which leads to both heading to a motel room. As Elice strips off her clothes in the bathroom, the guy sets up a secret tape to film them having sex. The video ends with the camera taping Elice and the guy in bed.
When the music video receive it's world premiere on 4Music, executives said that after the video was played they receive many phone calls and e-mails complaining about the video being too sexual to be on TV and unfortunately the video had to be edited. The edited version cuts most of the motel scenes, which was replaced by scenes of Elice backstage at the fashion show and dancing at the nightclub with her friends.
The music video was nominated for the 2009 Video Music Awards under the categories Best Dance Video and Viewers' Choice.

Tracklisting and formats[edit | edit source]

The CD single includes a 2009 Version of Elice Claire's song "One Night Only" which was given to singer Mischa, but Elice felt that song would be a perfect b-side for 'Keepin' U Up' due to the sound similarities. The 7" picture disc features the remix used on the SAVE URAPS performance.
