"Losing" is a song by American recording artist Alex Washington.
Background[edit | edit source]
'Losing' was announced as the lead single from Washington's EP Mourning & Other Pleasantries in early January 2022. Following the success of Washington's comeback album Optimism the previous year. The single premiered days later, and was an immediate hit at radio. Described as an emotional, but restrained ballad, 'Losing' was favourably compared to Washington's 2007 hit, 'Eclipse' by commentators. The single was Washington's first entirely self-produced release since 2011's 'Here We Go Again', and featured contributions from Washington's daughter, Bette.
The single was given a shot in the arm by a performance at the 2022 BRIT Awards, where Washington began with the track, before launching into his previous #1 single, 'On Empty'.
Music Video[edit | edit source]
Sophie Muller directed the video for "Losing", which was filmed on location in and around Havana, Cuba in January 2022. The video is the first part of a two-part series, that follows Washington around Havana as a retrieves a briefcase containing a mysterious object from a man in a square, before being followed by a woman, presumed to be police, to a remote location on the island. There, Washington is picked up by a helicopter on the remote beach before the woman can stop him.
The video received raves from critics, noting its contrast with the sadness of the lyrics and music in the ballad.
