"Outer Space" is a song by American singer/songwriter Bella-May, featured on her third studio album Ready or Not. Written by Bella and produced by Calvin Harris, the track was released as the album's third overall single (second in the United States and Canada) on November 4th 2013. It received a positive reception from critics, who considered it to be a highlight in her career. The single peaked at #7 in the UK and #3 in the USA.

Background[edit | edit source]

"Outer Space" was apparently written by Bella in December 2012. The final track was completed towards the end of January 2013 and was almost released as a single instead of "Ain't Got Shit", but was held back as the album's "safe single" choice incase "Ain't Got Shit" did not sell as much as anticipated. After the underperformance of "Ain't Got Shit", it was considered to be released as the second single, which would launch the album. The release was held off once again when Fusion Records deemed to to be "too cold" for a summer release and Bella was sent back into the studio to record a "summer smash" - she eventually came up with "Jägerbomb", her fourth #1 single. "Outer Space" was eventually released as the album's third single in November 2013, but did not become the "smash" Fusion were expecting, only charting at #7 in the UK. Despite the underperformance of the single, it did help the album reach a platinum certification.

Critical Reception[edit | edit source]

Upon release of Ready or Not, "Outer Space" received extremely positive reviews. Peter Robinson of Popjustice hailed the track as being the best from the album, labeling it a "certified winter smash".
Popular UK gay magazine, Attitude, described the song as being "full of perfectly crafted innuendos" and called it "THE track that needs to be played on every gay night out".
Adelle DeWitt of Diva Magazine gave the song 5/5 stars and claimed it was her favourite Bella-May song ever.

Music Video[edit | edit source]

Still from the video

The music video for "Outer Space" was shot in September 2013 and was directed by Ray Kay, who also directed the video for Bella's single "The Escort". The singer tweeted after the video shoot that it would be a "dance video" and most shots would be comprised mostly of Bella and her dancers performing a dance routine to the track. The video premiered in October 2013 through Bella's official VEVO. The video is set in a space ship "somewhere deep in outer space", according to a subtitle at the beginning of the video. Bella is seen performing an dance routing throughout the video while some glamour shots are shown throughout. There are some dance scenes in which Bella is not even present and the dancers are wearing full-length PVC catsuits. At the end of the video, the space ship crashes into earth. The video was positively received by critics and fans and within it's first week or premiering had a total of 5,000,000 views. It received heavy rotation on music channels in the UK also.
