"Pathetic" is a the debut single by British recording artist Bette.
Background[edit | edit source]
Following her legal emancipation from her father, Alex Washington, Bette released "Pathetic" as her debut single, a scathing piano ballad that unsubtly attacked her father and his instability. Critics raved about the cutting lyrics, and muted production helmed by Charlotte Moore.
Music Video[edit | edit source]
The music video for "Pathetic", directed by Sophie Muller, also proved controversial. Showing Bette entering a funeral for her father, where she plays the song, as flashbacks show the tension in their relationship, before Bette is seen at a cliffside, throwing her father's ashes off the cliff and into the wind. The patricidal theme drew much criticism (largely from Washington), but its artistic direction drew praise.
