Product Of The Past is the third single from Esmeralda Dimuzio's album Unfinished Business. The song is a tongue-in-cheek look at an aging popstar who tries to make a comeback, but gets pushed aside in favour of a new talent who she says won't last. In the end, she learns her moral that she shouldn't care if she's a so-called "product of the past" and should take pride in such status. The song is said to have a similar sound to "So What" by Pink.
The single is Esmeralda's first release with Wired Records after joining the label.
In response to critics saying she shouldn't do tongue-in-cheek songs like this, Esmeralda decided to cover novelty songs from the past as B-sides... the B-sides are covers of Annalina's I Want To Be Lucradeia, Melvin Be's Some Acts (Always Get #1) and It's Not Over Until The Fat Lady Sings and Allyseenah's We Went Plat'num.
Video[edit | edit source]
The video was premiered on POP BOX on June 20, 2009. It has two separate scenes intertwined together; Esmeralda walking around the Urapopstar Museum, encountering statues and exhibits on the biggest names of Urapopstar history, and one where she is performing to a crowd that starts out empty due to thinking that she's a washed-up hasbeen, but gradually fills up once fans realize that Esmeralda, despite being a so-called "product of the past", can still sing and perform like any other artist around today.
The video was reportedly Esmeralda's most expensive to date, and also includes archival footage from the opening scenes of Urapopstar Awards 9 and the SAVE URAPS telethon. It also includes Esmeralda singing interpolations of Claire Kitten's Glorified Porn Star, Melissa Moore's Undress Me With Your Eyes and Emma Brown and Russ Hooch's Body's Best Bet, along with her very own Standing Strong as an allusion to the fact that she has outlasted her former rival, Sarah Summers.
Chart performance[edit | edit source]
"Product of the Past" became Esmeralda's fifth #1 single, and first in over three years, when it reached the top spot on July 12, 2009 with sales of 79,999. It has also reached #1 on the pre-release chart and POP BOX, and #2 on airplay.
Since its release, it has become Esmeralda's best selling single to date, selling 342,256 copies to date.
Awards[edit | edit source]
"Product Of The Past" has received three nominations at the 2009 Video Music Awards: Best Female Video, Viewers' Choice and Video of the Year. It ended up winning Video of the Year.
"Product Of The Past" is also responsible for two of Essie's nominations at the Urapopstar Awards 17, as it was nominated in Best Single and Best Video.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
A segment on POP BOX was named after the song, where a veteran artist comments on 2 artists from the past of Urapopstar; a video from each is then added to the voting list for the next week's chart.
