"Rinse, Rinse" is the closing track from Romo's fourth studio album, Romo. The song will be released as the album's fourth single with new recorded parts from Paulo Araujo as a double A-side with the pair's collaboration "Frenemies" from Paulo's EP Versus. The collaborations came about as Romo and Paulo ended an aggressive yearlong feud that caused Paulo to suffer a nervous breakdown and nearly ended Romo's career.

The lyrics of "Rinse, Rinse" describe the relationship between two people who fight endlessly to bring each other down, yet both of them stand strong in the end. Romo wrote the song at the height of her feud with Paulo in the early part of 2010.

Background[edit | edit source]

"Rinse, Rinse" concerns a narrator's plea for repentance after an act of shameful wrongdoing. Its lyrics describe the relationship of a fighting couple who constantly fight but vow to stay strong in the end.

Romo said her writing of the song was highly inspired by her feud with Paulo Araujo in January 2010 when she was promoting "Bait & Switch/Hell Is A Discotheque" and he was promoting "Blunt", in which Paulo was predicted to hit #1 and Romo attempted to gain the upper hand in the highly publicized chart battle after declaring she would call for a "global tea boycott" if Paulo reached #1, referencing Paulo's beverage of choice. While Romo's declaration was intended to be nothing more than friendly competition, Paulo took it personally, breaking down in a televised interview in which he said he thought Romo was his friend, and shortly thereafter was checked in to the psych ward. A public backlash against Romo ensued and she lost #1 to Paulo.

Romo wrote "Rinse, Rinse" to express her dissatisfaction with her behavior during the chart battle and foolishness for carrying on with the feud, saying, "I didn't think before I acted, and had no idea what sort of consequences would result by it. I thought it was a playful tactic that would give me a boost in the predicts. But how was I to know Paulo would be hospitalized because of it?"

Despite the negative press throughout her feud with Paulo, Romo continued to lash out at Paulo at every possible chance, which she said in interviews was done to "defend her honor". But a year after the chart battle, Romo and Paulo patched up their differences, and Paulo offered Romo the chance to collaborate with him in the studio. The result of their collaboration was "Frenemies", which was included on Paulo's collaborations album Versus. Later, Paulo considered releasing it as a single, and also offered to remix "Rinse, Rinse" for single release adding his vocals, adlibs and additional production. Romo said of the idea to release it as a single, "Paulo was a good sport about my song, and I'm glad he was so good about it he even offered to take me up on remixing it and releasing it. Look at how far we've come from our feud."

Composition[edit | edit source]

"Rinse, Rinse" contains elements of electronic music and glam rock, drawing inspiration from David Bowie. The original album version is sparse and contains the single hook, "Cleanse me of my wounds, I'm not ready to die yet." The remix with Paulo Araujo contains additional lyrics, additional ad libs and production elements based on alternative hip hop.
