The Orgy Song is a song written by Bella-May and produced by Max Martin and Butterscotch and was released as the lead single to Bella's sophmore self titled album. The track featured Kazimiera and Flaming SteffY. It was also Bella's first release under Strawberry Records, which has since shut down due to Anna Jones going into liquidation. "The Orgy Song" debuted at #1 on the singles charts, selling 70,000 copies in it's first week. It was the lowest selling debut number 1 single since 2009. Since it's release, the single has been certified platinum.
Background[edit | edit source]
When announced in April 2011, "The Orgy Song" was originally meant to feature Butterscotch. However, she backed out at last minute as she wanted to retire from the music industry to become a professional bartender. Bella then asked good friends Kazimiera and Flaming SteffY to appear on the track and they agreed.
Censorship[edit | edit source]
"The Orgy Song" was heavily edited by radios around the UK. It's title had been changed to "The Kissing Song" and it's lyrics were altered drastically, to the disappointment of Bella. In Canada, the track was changed to "The OMG Song" which had a different recording artist, Frankie Sandford, who had a similar voice to Bella, record the parts which needed to be changed.
Critical Reception[edit | edit source]
Despite the censorship, "The Orgy Song" recieved extremely positive reviews from critics, many citing it as "a solid pop tune and classic Bella-May!". The Guardian predicted that the song would be a #1 and also added that it "will definitley be remembered in years to come". Popjustice listed it as their Song of the Day on May 4th 2011 and added that it was "jolly fucking good".
Worldwide Release[edit | edit source]
The track was the first of Bella's ever to be released outside of the UK and Ireland. "The Orgy Song" recieved an On Air/On Sale styled release in the USA, Canada, Asia, Japan and Oceania on May 2nd 2011, when the track premiered on radio. The European release (including the UK and Ireland) was on May 30th.
Unfortunatley, the single didn't gain any success in the USA or Canada. It debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at #87 and the Canadian Hot 100 at #98 before dropping off completley the week after. It did not chart in an Oceania countries either. It did, however, chart in Japan's official chart at #20 and sold approximatley 100,000 copies.
Music Video[edit | edit source]
The music video for "The Orgy Song" premiered on Bella's VEVO account on the 10th May 2011. The video was directed by Trudy Bellinger, who had worked with Bella before on the videos for "Boom Boom Bang" and "Your Worst Nightmare".
The video begins with Bella, SteffY and Kazimiera working at an office. They're shown to be really bored with their work and each is seen glancing at the clock every now and again to see how long left there is to work. Once the clock strikes 6 (PM), the girls hurry from their desks and into an elevator where they can be seen changing from a work uniform into slutty "cheerleader" inspired clothing. The elevator stops and lets them off into a club, where numerous Urapopstar acts will be seen (such as Brett Clarkson, Ruby and the Gems, Candi) engaging in one massive orgy. The video ends with everyone from the club going back to Bella's house and having one last orgy.
