Turnaround is the sixth single from pop singer Ana Simpson, written by singer Elice Claire and produced by Indigo Peak. It was released as a single on 14 September 2009, the second to be taken from Ana Simpson's second album Intensive Ground. The single received a nomination for BEST SINGLE at the 2010 Urapopstar Awards 18 and was also shortlisted for the 2010 Popjustice £20 Music Prize.

Background[edit | edit source]

An early demo of "Turnaround" was posted on Elice Claire's official site to show her fans what she was working on. This raw demo version of the song includes vocals from Ana Simpson and Elice Claire doing backings. Indigo Peak provided the final mix production for the song. The backing track, created by Elice Claire was inspired by Delta Goodrem's 'Believe Again'.
According to Ana Simpson the song is about a person who moved on without saying a proper goodbye, but when this person goes back to try to fix what was wrong, things were different. Not everything in life goes as well as we plan, for most of the time things will go wrong, even though we may pretend they are going right.

Critical reception[edit | edit source]

"Turnaround" was very well received by most music critics. The Guardian called the song a "perfect example of a pop ballad with a true message behind it." A reviewer for Virgin Media said that the song's "dull lyrics could put coffee to sleep" but praises the amazing production behind it. BBC Music described the song as a "contemporary pop masterpiece, unlike any other song that is currently charting."

Gavin Martin of the Daily Mirror gave the song 4/5 stars and wrote: "It's sort of got that enormous, over-emotional 'Battlefield' thing going on, yeah? But with beats! That is so clever and suitable for the lyrics of the song. This could possibly be one of Simpson's brightest work. Why do people not make more songs like this? why? why? I need more of this in my life!"

Music video[edit | edit source]

Behind the scenes of "Turnaround".

The video, shot in a warehouse in Sydney, was filmed in the first weekend of August 2009 by Michael Spiccia. In it, Simpson plays different mystical characters including a water nymph most likely to be the Nymph of Springs Pegaeae, a crystal-covered, cave dwelling Wiccan or Nymph and a sky goddess swathed in navy satin, most likely Aušrinė, a Lithuanian Sky deity. According to the Sun Herald newspaper, it is one of the most expensive music videos to be produced in recent years. When speaking exclusively about the video, Simpson said: "There's flames and water - it's a real fantasy sequence, but it's quite dark. It's not going to be a bright-looking clip."
The video is the first to be released in HD resolution in the UK. The video has many special-effects, in total 109 shots according to the director, more than the average feature film. It took 2 days to film and 6 weeks to complete the special effects. Art-directors from Australia, America and Spain were included in the production of the video.
The Music video was premiered on Ana Simpson's official website on August 29. The official TV premiere was on POP BOX a day after it was premiered on Simpson's official website. The video hit #1 on the series finale of POP BOX, where Ana performed live.
