Background[edit | edit source]
"What It Feels Like for a Girl" was written by Madonna Ciccone, Guy Sigsworth and David Torn for Madonna's eighth studio album Music (2000). The original track contains a spoken introduction by actress Charlotte Gainsbourg taken from the 1993 film version of the Ian McEwan novel, The Cement Garden (this excerpt was re-recorded for the charity release).
Following his role as the aggressor in a California shooting, video footage of killer Elliot Rodger's misogynistic rants were leaked to the Internet. His words spurred the social media campaign #YesAllWomen which took Twitter by storm, receiving high-profile media attention, female participation and even male backlash. Nicola suggested a supergroup of female artists record a cover of Madonna's song as a collaborative charity effort to draw attention to violence against women.
