"Away From You" is the third single from Australian dance diva Veronica Nightshade's debut album "30 Days Of Night". Dedicated to her husband and released on Valentines' Day, the song became her second UK top 5 hit and third Australian top 10. The song was recorded in both a ballad version and a dance version; the single mix utilised a combination of the two. "Away From You" was the final single from the standard edition of the album.

Background[edit | edit source]

"Away From You" was written in 2010, and was recorded as part of the additional sessions Veronica undertook to turn her debut EP into a full-length album. She dedicated the song to her husband Jonathan Hargreaves, as it was written about the time Veronica spent away from him (her then-fiance) and missing him while she was focusing on her career. Veronica worked with Lenny Bertoldo to make the song an emotional dance anthem, and she also recorded a ballad version of the song to show diversity in her vocal capabilities and musical style. The song was chosen as the third single while she was promoting "Not Broken", with the intention that she would return in 2011 to release it after her wedding and honeymoon. Veronica was back in the game in January 2011 to promote the song after having eloped, revealing that the single version of "Away From You" would feature both ballad and dance versions of the song. The single mix uses the ballad version for the first verse and chorus, before switching up to the dance version for the rest of the song.

Reception[edit | edit source]

After the relative failure of "Not Broken" to make a lasting impression, expectations for the third single were not high; however due to the song's heartfelt nature it better captured the public's attention in comparison to its predecessor. It curried greater favour on radio than "Not Broken"; although it had a short run with a low cumulative spin total, it peaked one position lower than "Army Of Clones". Digitally it was barely bigger than "Not Broken", another minor digital hit for Veronica; but the Valentines sentiment coupled with severe backlash against chart rival and front-runner Luke Ramada helped Veronica's single connect majorly with the buying public. Physical sales helped the song chart in the top 5 (higher than expected) and reach silver certification. In Australia, with two hits already under her belt, "Away From You" managed to keep the success going by achieving another sales and airplay hit for Veronica.

Music Video[edit | edit source]

The video opens with the intro to the ballad version; Veronica is seen sitting on a swing in the middle of a circus tent, elevated above the crowd in a white dress with a microphone in her hand. She begins to sing the song as media personnel go wild below her snapping pictures and recording her. We also see the first shots of the beach scene, with Veronica sitting on a sheltered bench as she looks out across the sand. Special effects provide us with a shot of Veronica sitting on both sides of the bench. Meanwhile, the Veronica in the media circus is still putting on a show for the cameras. This Veronica is slowly lowered down, and we see her getting off the swing and stepping into the centre of the circus ring. Beach Veronica continues to sing the first verse as she watches a solitary man standing and staring out across the ocean; we see only his back. Cutting back to circus Veronica, we see her staring intently into the crowd of the media circus, singing the chorus to a man sitting far in the back row, as reporters madly try to figure out and scribble down notes about what’s going on, so they can brainstorm headline ideas. Beach Veronica is next seen sitting across from a solitary girl also staring out across the beach. Neither this girl nor the man from before have noticed each other, or Veronica; who seems to be the only one aware of them both. The chorus comes to an end as circus Veronica finishes off her performance. This is where the ballad portion ends, and the dance version kicks in.

With the dance version kicking in, we see the first shot of the club scene. During the brief instrumental section, we see Veronica moving through the crowd of club-goers in slow motion. When the second verse kicks in, we see inter-cut shots of Veronica back at the beach and in the club singing to the camera. Toward the end of the second verse, when Veronica sings about being alone, we see the girl from before lying down on a table, arm outstretched with rings in her hand. We see her hand opening up and the rings falling out onto the ground. As the chorus hits, we see the crowd at regular speed, parting to reveal Veronica’s love interest. Veronica makes her way through the crowd toward her love interest, as they’re drawn to each other as if by magnetism. Interspersed are shots of Veronica walking along the beach, as we see the crowd in the club dancing at super-speed. Club-goers get in Veronica’s way as she tries to reach her love interest, and she looks at them in bemusement as they hog the camera. Despite all this, her love interest is still bridging the gap between them, and we see more shots of Veronica singing to the camera at the beach.

As the bridge hits, we see the man from the beach again, still standing alone and watching the ocean. An umbrella tumbles past him. In contrast to him being alone, we see Veronica and her love interest coming together and dancing in slow motion, while the girl from the beach is also still alone. Shots of Veronica singing the breakdown in the club are shown, and for the rest of the video, we see performance shots of her in the club singing to the camera inter-cut with shots from the beach, where an elderly couple are seen sitting together on beach chairs. They clasp hands, and special effects swap out the elderly couple for Veronica and her love interest from the club; implying that Veronica and her love interest will still be together many years on. The video closes with a shot of young Veronica reflected in a rock-pool, before the video fades to black.

Chart Performance[edit | edit source]

"Away From You" provided Veronica with what was then both her peak chart position and peak sales week, opening at #4 with sales of 56,715 copies. This wound up being the song's only week in the top 10, but the single was able to reach silver certification before it exited the chart. Digitally it wasn't really any bigger a hit than "Not Broken", but it outperformed its predecessor on airplay to become a minor airplay hit for Veronica. In Australia, the song was another easy top 10 for Veronica after the major success she'd found with previous singles "Army Of Clones" and "Not Broken".
