Reception[edit | edit source]

Pop music website SOUND first gave details on the single ahead of its premiere, describing it as melodic, trippy and unlike anything MIDNIGHT had released previously. Blogs and fans were mostly positive, praising MIDNIGHT's return to a more radio-friendly pop sound after the experimental style of album Riot Grrrl.

Music video[edit | edit source]

Midnight seen in the "Hallucinate" video.

Ahead of the song's video premiere, MIDNIGHT updated her website's blog, revealing she was nervous for her fans to see the video due to its lack of storyline or high budget, an approach taken on purpose in order to create a visual that matched the song. The song's accompanying music video premiered on Vevo on March 6, 2015. MIDNIGHT is seen in one location and sports two outfits throughout the video's duration. The majority of the video shows MIDNIGHT staring into the camera, as a variety of visual effects and glitch footage continuously come onto the screen.

The video received a mixed response from critics, The Guardian commented, "MIDNIGHT's one of the rare pop artists who lets us down when it comes to an exciting video. But with her comeback video shot entirely in one location as a mixture of cheap effects try to distract us, it's hard not to be disappointed." Pitchfork stated, "MIDNIGHT's new video looks like something a struggling indie artist would film, before getting an inexperienced editor to slap a dozen computer effects over it. But we feel MIDNIGHT is completely aware of this, she's in on the joke with us, and that's the true charm of this risky video from one of pop's leading ladies." Popjustice tweeted after the video's premiere, "Did I just watch a Windows Movie Maker advert? Brilliant. 4/5."
