The Filth and the Fury is the fourth studio album by British all-female rock band Innocent. Although Innocent had initially decided to split following the completion of The Madhouse Live tour in 2007, a subsequent greatest hits album and the success of its singles led the band to renew their contract with Wired Records. "Better Left Unsaid", a collaboration with Arwyn Knight, was particularly successful, becoming Innocent's best-selling single. Innocent reunited with Knight on The Filth and the Fury with the track "Spinning Wheels." Due to friction in the band, most songs were recorded separately; Elizabeth Stratten played more of a role in writing and recording than both of her bandmates. The album is divided into two halves, "The Filth" and "The Fury." The former features midtempo and downtempo indie-rock songs, while the latter half is more uptempo, aggressive alternative rock music. Influences of electronica are present throughout. The album title is a reference to the Sex Pistols, which is a recurring theme seen in the cover art and the single "Sid and Nancy".

The album received universal acclaim from contemporary music critics, who felt it was Innocent's maturest and strongest album to date. Despite a lack of promotion, the album was commercially successful. It became Innocent's third number one album as well as their third to receive a diamond certification. Lead single "Creatures of the Night" and follow-up "Sid and Nancy" both entered the top five, while third single "Dirty Sexy Money" charted at number two with strong sales. On the other hand, follow-up "Urban Decay"/"Bleeding Suburbia" barely cracked the top ten and sold poorly. In December, Innocent released their final single as a group, "Mending Hearts," which was a top three success. Their farewell was accompanied by a concert, Well and Truly Dead: Live at the O2, preceded by The Filth and the Fury Tour.
