"Cold Summer" is a single by pianist and singer Arianna DiCorso, released as the second single from Arianna's debut album "Take A Picture, It'll Last Longer" in America. In the UK it was released as the lead single of Arianna's "'Snapshot' EP", as a double A-side with "Little Miss Knock-Her-Up" which served as the fifth and final single from the UK version of the album. The single was released on October 15th, 2012, and has yet to chart.

Background[edit | edit source]

"Cold Summer" was written by Romo for a collaborative project involving a number of artists recording songs penned and produced by Romo. The song was given to Arianna for the project, but the album was scrapped and the recordings offered to the vocalists. Arianna held onto the song with the intention to put it on her second album, but the song was later removed from the project after it did not fit with the concept Arianna had developed for the album. While preparing the American release of her debut album "Take A Picture, It'll Last Longer", Arianna was instructed to replace a number of songs with new material more compatible with the American market. "Cold Summer" found its home here, and it was picked out to be Arianna's second single following the success of "I Bite". Not wanting her UK fans to miss out, Arianna bundled together the US tracks on a EP, and supported the release with "Cold Summer" as its lead single. Since the EP was an extension of the album, it was packaged together with "Little Miss Knock-Her-Up" and released as a double A-side single. Attempts were made to remix "Cold Summer" and release it to clubs, but the quality of the remixes was poor so Arianna had them scrapped, with "Little Miss Knock-Her-Up" serving as the club single instead.

Reception[edit | edit source]

"Cold Summer" received a heavy amount of praise for the strength of Romo's lyrics, and was especially praised by critics for Arianna's vocal delivery. The song has climbed into the upper end of the digital chart prior to release, due to the hype surrounding the single. In America it handily climbed up Arianna's core radio formats, but has not received much crossover airplay due to being far more alternative-leaning than its predecessor. The song has yet to chart on airplay in the UK.

Music Video[edit | edit source]

The video opens to a cold shot of a lighthouse, far in the distance, on an overcast day. We focus on a piece of driftwood floating in the water of the sea, washing toward shore, when a hand reaches down and picks it up. Pulling back, we see Arianna sitting on the dock with the driftwood in her hand. She looks out across the water and sings the first verse as the camera pulls in and out of focus. As she sings, Arianna turns around and looks up at the buildings behind her. On the top of one such building, she sees a person standing on a rooftop balcony. The camera zooms in to show a second Arianna. The first Arianna watches as the other Arianna climbs over the railing and jumps off to her death; before she hits, she explodes into black smoke and evaporates. The first Arianna disintegrates into a white mist as the scene changes.

Black smoke Arianna re-emerges in an underworld cavern, dressed up and made-up, wearing a red dress. She hides her face in the shadows as she performs more of the song for the camera, restless and constantly moving about. Arianna shivers as though cold, although she is just a ghost in this nowhere world. The scene changes again, this time to a dark hall where hooded occult figures line the room on two sides. We can see that they’re all wearing masks. Eventually we center on a figure in the center of them all, this one in a red hood which is down covering her eyes. This is Arianna yet again, being prepared for induction into the underworld (in reference to the last lines of the song).

The hooded figures beckon for Arianna to stand, and she does so. Slowly she begins to walk through the lines of hooded figures, each of them bowing their heads to her as she passes. She reaches the end of the lines, and comes to a stop. Pulling her hood off, she delivers the final two lines of the song before exploding into red smoke while everyone around her explodes into black and white smoke. It all gets sucked into the floor and the screen fades to black.

Chart Performance[edit | edit source]

"Cold Summer" is Arianna's sixth top 5 digital hit in the UK, prior to its official release as a single. It has yet to impact the airplay chart or the sales chart. The song has been gaining traction at alternative and rock formats on American radio, and has jumped into the top 5 on the Billboard rock charts. It has broken the top 100 on the Hot 100, Arianna's second song to chart.
