"The Other Side of Tonight" is a song recorded by London recording artist Aurora Reed for her second studio album Haute Mess (2012). The song is due to be released on March 18th, 2013, as a digital download release. The track was written by Aurora Reed and Canadian producer Noah "40" Shebib, with production by the latter. It is a midtempo, alternative R & B song, where Aurora discusses a night that is make or break in a relationship.
Music journalists were quick to point out that the track was an album highlight, due to the 'genuine, raw emotion' Aurora exerted on the track, bringing a futuristic, progressive r'n'b edge to her sound.
Background[edit | edit source]
Writing and production[edit | edit source]
The song was written by Aurora and Noah "40" Shebib, who had produced the track "Lose My Pride" for Aurora's debut album, Thoughts To Word. The song was written based on Aurora's past relationship with socialite and DJ Nick Blacker. In an interview with SOUND, Aurora revealed the track was based on a night in their relationship where they sat down and discussed their relationship, and in the back of her mind hoping they could resolve things because she wanted him to stay the night with her. Aurora claims that she found the track so 'bittersweet', because for some people the song would be a baby making track, but to her it was so heartbreaking, often commenting the track was so personal to her that she cried whilst recording it, and would find it difficult to perform live. The track was produced by Noah Shebib at Metalworks Studio in Ontario.
Release[edit | edit source]
Aurora announced that The Other Side of Tonight would serve as a download only release from the album, the second track to receive this treatment from the album (after Queen N Country). The song was released on March 18th, 2013, as a download only release. The song reached the top spot on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Airplay Chart, and top 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, with the song marking Aurora's first impact onto the charts Stateside.
Composition[edit | edit source]
The Other Side of Tonight is a PBR&B midtempo track, that features elements from hip hop and quiet storm. It has a duration of 4 minutes and 17 seconds. Instrumentation consists of synthesizers and drum machines. When commenting on the album, Rob Markman of MTV explained how the lyrics unveil a double meaning, "The moment of bittersweet ecstasy, when your heart is so focused on one thing and knowing it could very well not get it", citing the lyrics "Cos if we break, we break, but if we make it I wanna wake up with you, on the other side of tonight" as a perfect example of this.
Video[edit | edit source]
The video has been directed by Rankin, who previously photographed Aurora for her Haute Mess album photoshoot, and featured her on the cover of Hunger Magazine.
The video was premiered on March 8th, 2013. It featured Aurora and popular model Ryan Edwards in a black and white video that paid homage to Hollywood sex symbols of the 1960's. We see Aurora prepare herself for her sweetheart. When he turns up, the pair kiss and the screen splits in two, based on the reaction to the kiss (a reference to cult 90's film "Sliding Doors"). One screen sees Aurora and her lover make love, whilst in the other scene Aurora goes to bed upset and alone. Both videos end with Aurora waking up without her man.
