Till Death Us Do Part is the second album by Welsh singer and songwriter, Persephone. Released via Bumblebee Records on August 5, 2013. It was released in 2 formats, a regular edition which includes 12 tracks and a 15 track Deluxe edition which, like her debut album, includes 15 tracks and a bonus DVD of a live performance. This was released alongside the second single Heart Don't Leave Me, rather than with the original release.
Content[edit | edit source]
- The album opens with Primitive an adaptation of the Roisin Murphy track of the same name. The track is entirely a capella and takes influence from using the body as an instrument, with layered vocals for harmonies and a human beatbox for beats. The track was influenced by work from Bjork and Camille. "I took a lot of influence from some strong female performers when putting this track together. The whole thing is very primal and masculine, but I wanted to prove that women can be like that too". The track talks about love being an instinctual thing rather than a calculated one. The track was released as the album's first single and charted at #3.
- Track two is 'Heart Don't Leave Me which is also the second single. Primarily a dance track, the song starts off a capella, leading from the previous track, and slowly builds up in to a club stomper. On the song: "I never thought I'd do a dance track. I'm not in to dance music. I'm not in to remixes. None of this interested me untila few months ago, but I guess I am open to new things and experimenting, more so than I thought, and that's how this song came about".
- Two Towers is the third song on the album. A poetic duet with Suicide Blonde. "When I saw her I knew I had to work with her. She's fabulous. We're similar in so many ways and when she agreed to work with me I was honoured. I guess that was the highlight of my year". The two women take turns to tell a story about a man who is seeing them both, but instead of being mad at each other, they have decided to use this to their advantage and control the man's emotions. Drawing comparisons to bands such as Mumford and Sons, the track has been described as "The Boy Is Mine" if Brandy and Monica were smarter. Or witches.
- The fourth track, Words, is an aggressive nod to songs that sensor the word "Fuck" on their radio edits, replacing them with "Love" or "Forget". Persephone directly referenced those two examples in the song. "I don't think it's such a bad word or such a bad thing, honestly. Words are words and some people get too precious over swearing. I don't have a potty mouth personally, but if myself or someone else feels that that is the most appropriate word at the time, why not use it?"
- Love Songs shows a more tender side of Persephone as she discusses how songs about lost love she heard in her youth gave her a bad impression about the experience in general. The media tends to focus on relationships going wrong in the end and nobody really talks about those life long romances. "If you think about the most popular love songs, they're all negative. I'm a hypocrite with this song as it's negative too but that's proving my point, in a way"
- The One I Love is an uptempo track influenced by bands like The Cardigans. The song is happy and cheery sounding but the theme is grim and sad. A reference to earlier track "Numb", it talks of being unhappy in a relationship, especially if it is going right. There's always a need for drama and arguments to keep the passion alive, with a disturbing nod to domestic violence.
