"You Can't Lose Me" is a song by English singer-songwriter Iris. Released as her third single on 25 June, 2012, the track is the lead single released from her first EP "Kaleidoscope". It is also her first ever release on the label Next Generation Records, as her debut era was all independently released. The song has become Iris's biggest hit at the time, charting at #5, becoming her first top 5 and highest charting single until the release of "Poison Ivy" two years later (2014).

Background[edit | edit source]

Very early in 2012, Iris revealed that she would be giving up her music career, following her dissapointment regarding the success of "Hearts On The Radio". However a statement release on 14 May, 2012 announced that she would be returning with a new single in June, taken from her second studio album. However it was revealed the follow-up single and album would not be released until early 2013, which was a move many fans questioned. On 23 May, it was revealed that Iris had changed her plans, and that she would now be releasing the single from a 5 track EP, both of which would be released on 25 June, although it has now been brough forward a week to 18 June. About the single, Iris described it as "majestic" and revealed it was about her singing to her children who were yet to born, and that although the public have claimed she's too insane and won't make a suitable mother, she still has a strong heart and the capacity to love, therefore will be a fantastic mum.

Release and reception[edit | edit source]

The song recieved a positive response from critics. Digital Spy commented "besides the fact she's the most mentally insane popstar on the planet, there's one thing that sets Iris apart from the rest of her chart rivals, and thats her sincerity through her music. Every track has the ability to give the listener goosebumps, and this track is the prime example. Not many artists are brave enough to record a track about their nerves and anxciousness towards become a parent, let alone dedicating an entire (lead) single to their child. But it's the passion in Iris's voice that really sells the track for us."

Music video[edit | edit source]

The video premiered on Saturday 16 June 2012. Before the video's premiere, the director revealed the story behind the video, stating: "The video reflects the song and relates to Iris's pregnancy. It shows the stages from the past (finding out shes pregnant), present (her nerves towards become a mother) and future (giving birth). It's meant to be simplistic but touching, and involves a lot of sitting and tummy hiding for Iris considering she's 8 months pregnant with twins."

Iris sings into her mirror in the video for "You Can't Lose Me"

The video begins with Iris sitting on the phone, pressumably to Jason. "I've got something to tell you" she whispers. "I..I'm pregnant. With triplets." Iris waits for a response, but gets none. Sadly she puts the phone down and crawls into her bed, deep in thought. The music begins and Iris walks over to the mirror. She sits and looks quite emotional as she begins to sing to the camera/mirror. Suddenly Iris's hands are shown to go under the desk and hold her stomach, as she looks down. She looks in pain. This symbolises when one of Iris's triplets pass away. She looks towards the mirror and wipes away the tears from her eyes. Iris sits on the edge of the bed and looks into the air. Her finger is shown as her wedding rings slips off, symbolising Jason leaving her. Iris then removes her jewlerry, showing she is removing him from her life and focusing on her twins. The camera flashes between two scenes based on the future, showing Iris sitting in bed alone, reflecting the fact she now goes to bed alone every night. The other scene shows Iris on the floor, feeling her contractions on her own. Iris sits back and forgets about all the bad times that have happened over the past few months. She just closes her eye as raindrops pour into the room, symbolising washing away the past and bring on a new start. Now soaking, Iris sings the final part of the song to the mirror, where she somewhat tells her babies a nursery rhyme. The camera slowly fades out into black.
