"Hearts On The Radio" is a song written and produced by Ben Johnston for URAPS Idol 12 finalist and URAPS Big Brother 2011 winner Iris's debut album. The track was released as her second single on 30 January, 2012, almost five months after her debut and charted at #8 on the charts.

Background[edit | edit source]

Upon the release of Iris's debut album "In The Realms Of Reality", the album was a massive success, charting at #1 in the Album chart. The album recieved a positive response from fans and critics, however "Hearts On The Radio" arguably recived the strongest praise, with the majority of fans demanding it be released as the album's second single.

After the release of "Against The Wall", Iris appeared on the show URAPS Big Brother 2011, which she eventually went on to win. However, her husband Jason Adams also appeared on the show, and the couple concieved a child while in the house. This meant that Iris would be pregnant during the release of her second single. In mid-December 2011, Iris revealed that her second single would be revealed on New Years Eve. When the date came, "Hearts On The Radio" was announced as the new single.

In January, whilst promoting the single in Australia, Iris was hit by a drunk driver, which ended up resulting in the miscarriage of one of her three unborn babies. Naturally, she cancelled upcoming promotion throughout all of the following week, besides an interview with Radio 1. It also meant Iris was unable to walk for the duration of her promotion, meaning she sat for live performances, and was on crutches when walking.

On 27 January 2012 the song was performed on The Jonathon Ross Show, which was also the first time Iris's pregnancy bump was noticable.

Release and reception[edit | edit source]

Upon the album's release, "Hearts On The Radio" became the instant favourite with both fans and critics, and many petitions were set up online to ensure that it was the second single released from the album, despite the fact it was not the initial second choice. Despite Iris struggling to recieve enormous chart success, she has always managed to be a big hit with the critics, with the song gaining mostly perfect reviews upon it's release.

Music video[edit | edit source]

The video premiered on January 25, 2012. Before it's premiere it was described as "bright" and "wacky", to reflect Iris's personality.

Iris during the second scene in the video for "Hearts On The Radio"

The video begins with various shots of Iris, however in all of them she is hiding from the camera, obviously shy from love. A shot of a radio starts playing the song. Iris lowers her hand and starts singing to the camera. It's a traditional Iris shot, with her in all black with a dark background. The next shot shows Iris firstly from a distance, and then more close, dancing in an all-in-one white, black and pink jumpsuit. She dances and sings to the song. Close ups of Iris still in this outfit are shown. While she sings, the pattern behind her spreads across the screen. The next scene shows Iris on a chair, riding it, lying back on it, and just doing weird Iris things. This scene represents Iris's crazy side. With bright red hair and crazy lips, she rocks out to the song, showing some swag. As more patterns move behind her, Iris has fun on another chair, this time with blue hair. In an open pink polka dot suit, and with electric blue hair, Iris dances to the song, as the camera zooms around and shows several Iris's. Which is quite scary as one is more than enough! The chorus comes on again, and Iris sings infront of flashing strobe lights, pulling various strange faces. Looking more like the Iris everyone knows, she dances and sings once more to the song. The song is coming to and end, and shots of Iris's face from each scene are shown on the screen. Iris stands as the vocals end and only the music is playing. As it begins to die out, the background behind her drops and fades out. The radio clicks itself off again and the final thing shown is Iris showing a heart to the camera, representing the hearts on the radio.
