"On Empty" is a song by American recording artist Alex Washington.

Background[edit | edit source]

'On Empty' was announced as the fourth single from Washington's fourth studio album Optimism in July 2021. The single built off the success of Washington's previous single, his collaboration with longtime best friend Loretta Lambert, "Relaxxx", which hit #2. Thanks to Washington's heightened profile at the time thanks to several tabloid scandals, including his legal battles with Wetherspoons founder Tim Martin, as well as his aborted promotional deal with OnlyFans, the single became Washington's first to reach #1 in the UK since 2011's "Here We Go Again". The single became the biggest-selling of the Optimism campaign, selling nearly 600,000 copies.

Music Video[edit | edit source]

Hype Williams directed both versions of the video for "On Empty", which featured Washington in a highly-styled gay bathhouse, engaging in various stylized sexual activities. The director's cut of the video was to be part of a promotional deal between Washington and OnlyFans, but when the website announced it would be banning all explicit content from its platform, Washington pulled the video, and out of the deal entirely, in protest. The video was ordered destroyed, but ended up in the hands of a blackmailer, who demanded £500,000 in exchange for the video, or it would be publicized.

In 2022, the blackmailer was revealed to be Washington's fiancé, Will Taylor.
