Release and reception[edit | edit source]
The song premiered on 13 August 2015. HuffingtonPost wrote about the song "Dakota's latest promo single "Hearts" is a modern attestation of self-worth and feminine empowerment... it's an opening statement as to the corners of the earth she's helping us to explore through this upcoming album. Joe Rivers of No Ripcord gave the song a positive review, saying: "It makes you wonder why Dakota Prescott isn't all over commercial radio; it's a catchy, well-constructed pop song that manages to pack a lot in without conforming to the Guetta/Harris dance-pop template, instead injecting an effortless, swaggering cool."
In its list of the best songs of 2015, Pitchfork ranked "Hearts" at number 61, saying that it "could even make Tumblr’s weird pop elite attempt a shimmy." Marc Hogan of Spin Magazine said that the new single "wonderfully emphasizes the pure-pop joy and street-cool swagger that lurks behind the hypnotic shadows on tracks by Dakota".
Music video[edit | edit source]
The video premiered on 19 August 2015. The video for "Hearts" is set in a dark underground club.
The video is relatively simple. Dakota walks around the club, with boys trying to make moves on her, however she doesn't at any point show them any attention, and as she pushes each one away - cartoon stylised hearts pour out of the boys and shatter on the floor. On occasions, cartoon tears fall from their eyes too.
Various other cartoony images are portrayed throughout the video, such as Dakota blowing a kiss and a cartoon red pair of lips flying across the club and knocking a guy off his feet.
As the video ends, Dakota dives backwards into a sea of the broken hearts she created throughout the video and laughs as she somewhat crowd surfs amongst them.
