"Missing You" is a song by Canadian R&B singer Jackson Bradshaw. The song was written by Bradshaw himself and Stephanie Kesh and was produced by Dot da Genius. Released on May 14, 2012, the song serves as the lead single from Bradshaw's debut album Something Special while being his fourth single overall. The song details the protagonist's agony of missing the woman he loves after they had broken up. The lyrical content of the song spawned speculation that song was inspired by and is about Bradshaw's real-life failed relationship with singer Ruby Stephingham.

The song received positive reviews from critics and fans alike and in May 2012, the single debuted at #2 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming his highest peaking single to date and serving as his "breakthrough" hit. The single has been certified Gold in the UK.

Background[edit | edit source]

"Missing You" was originally written in 2011 by Bradshaw, Kesh, and Bradshaw's former frequent songwriting partners Charles Stephens and Robert Thinne, who had previously produced all of Jackson's previous singles and was supposed to produce this song. After Bradshaw had a falling out with Stephens and Thinne, Bradshaw and Kesh re-wrote the song in early 2012 and recorded it for the "second" re-recorded sessions for Bradshaw's debut album. The song was produced by Dot da Genius, making it the first time that Bradshaw recorded a song that did not have Thinne serving as a producer. "Missing You" was said to be one of the last tracks recorded for the album.

Composition and lyrical content[edit | edit source]

According to a press statement for the song, "Missing You" is described as having a "weird urban-inspired beat", a "heartbreaking and devastating melody", and "heartwrenching" lyrics. Bradshaw's vocals on the song is described as him "in agony as he yearns and pines for the woman he loves to come back" but is also described as "sultry, soothing, and sexy".

Musically, the song is somewhat of a departure for Bradshaw who, as demonstrated with his previous singles, often sang R&B/urban songs that had an "adult contemporary vibe to them", in which this song is considered to not have.

Release[edit | edit source]

The song premiered on April 4, 2012. "Missing You" will be released commercially on May 14, 2012 in the UK and Ireland and on May 15, 2012 in the United States and Canada.

Reception[edit | edit source]

The song managed to get positive reviews with many people naming the song as Bradshaw's "definite sign that he is back with a bang". The song received praised for its production and Bradshaw's vocals which were described as "smooth". The lyrical content recieved some ambivalent (but mostly positive) attention because of the line "I'll have you know that ever since you left I've hated arichetecture" in which some some critics described the line as "too indie for an R&B song" and "very random". The lyrical content of the song was speculated to be about the deteriorated and failed relationship of Bradshaw and Ruby & The Gems' singer Ruby Stephingham. Bradshaw initially denied that the song was about Ruby, but has since admitted that it is about the singer following the couple's second break-up in 2012.

Remixes[edit | edit source]

Remixes by James Moss, Aimee Lyons, Loretta Lambert, Venus Vegas, and a mash up between "Missing You" and "Zip Your Sh!t" by Bloom were made for the single release of the song.

Chart performance[edit | edit source]

"Missing You" debuted at #9 on the UK "Next In Line" Airplay Chart, which is equivalent to peaking at #49. It fell off the chart altogether the following week but would re-entered at #8 (equivalent to #48). Eventually, the song would debut at #29 on the main UK Airplay Chart and peak at #15. The song also debuted at #16 on the UK Downloads Chart and has since peaked at #7.

In May 2012, the single debuted at #2 on the UK Singles Chart, selling more than 80,142 copies in its first week of sales. The single has become Bradshaw's highest peaking single to date and was considered his "breakthrough" hit as well, despite him having prior commercial success with his previous singles, two of which were top ten hits in the UK. Indeed, the single is Bradshaw's third top ten hit in the UK and also his first to reach the top three there. After two weeks of sales, which totaled at more than 130,000 copies, the single was certified Silver by the BPI (British Phonograph Industry) in the UK; it is currently certified Gold and has sold over 211,000 copies in total. The single also debuted at #2 in Ireland.

In Canada, on the Canadian Hot 100, the single peaked at #2, becoming his highest peaking single in his home country and is currently certified Gold there. In the United States, the single reached #19 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his first top twenty there. It also reached #2 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, becoming his first top five hit on that chart.

Music video[edit | edit source]

The music video for "Missing You" premiered on May 14, 2012, the same day that the single was released commercially. The video was shot on a beach in Canada in March 2012, just shortly before Bradshaw even revealed that "Missing You" would be released as a single. According to sources, the video was supposed to premiere the week or weekend before but for various unknown reasons was delayed.

The video features Jackson trying to enjoy himself on a sunny beautiful day by doing various activities such as him sailing on the boat by himself and relaxing on the beach. He's unable to do this, however, because he still cannot get over his former lover. He has flashbacks and thinks of the good memories he and his lover once shared. The more he thinks about these memories, the more he stays sad and despondent over his failed romance with his former lover.

The has to date received positive reviews from fans and has so far accumulated 9 million views on VEVO and YouTube.
