Girls Like Dynamite is a joint single by Ruby and the Gems and Bella-May, released via Fusion Records on December 17th 2012. The single was in aid of the Beat Bullying UK charity. The track was written by both vocalists and produced by British production team Xenomania. On December 23rd 2012, the track officially debuted at #1 on the Urapopstar Singles Charts, becoming the 2012 Christmas #1. It was Bella's third consecutive time to hit the top spot and Ruby's second consecutive #1.

Proceeds from the single and the Lick My Gem Tour were donated to the Beat Bullying charity. The pair also starred in a 2 part documentary for BBC, Bullying: The Hidden Truth.

Background[edit | edit source]

Rumours of a collaboration single between Ruby and Bella began as far back as July 2012. At that time, both artists were touring the United Kingdom and were spotted leaving a recording studio together. Bella's PR later quenched the rumours, stating that Bella was recording a track for her third album and Ruby only popped in to say hello and listen to the track.
The collab rumours surfaced again in October 2012 when Ruby tweeted a picture of herself and Bella, with a finger to their lips in a "Shhh" manor, with the caption: "We've got a secret to share, we can not wait for you guys to find out! X". In early November 2012, the single release was announced. Days later, the Lick My Gem Tour was announced.

Release and reception[edit | edit source]

NME were the first to review the track, which they called "the collaboration of 2012". They praised the "hot mess" production and complimented both artists on the good cause the single was raising money for. Popjustice had the song as their "Song of the Day", with the caption "The greatest song of the 21st century". Eloise Clarke from SPKTRM cited the songs "whacky, bitchy and catchy" lyrics as the best thing about the track and said her favourite lyric was the silly "We gonna give you Rubella-la-la".

Music Video[edit | edit source]

The music video, directed by Taylor Cohen, premiered on December 3rd on a Rubella VEVO channel, which also contained a lyric video to the track.

Stills from the video

The video begins showing both singers' lips. It's unknown who's are who's, but one pair is luminous pink and the other is luminous orange. They mouth to the lyrics "We gonna give you Rubella-la-la". As the first verse kicks in, there are scenes of Ruby and Bella in a dimly lit diner, which has a purple hue to it. They sing the song as dancers surround them, dancing to the song. The scenes with the luminous lips are shown in-between these scenes too.
As the second verse begins, there are scenes of Bella and Ruby in a black setting with a spotlight on them. All three scenes are shown throughout the rest of the video. The video ends with Ruby and Bella sharing a milkshake together.
