"Hate You" is the third single from English singer Dakota Prescott's debut studio album "Welcome To The Brat Pack". The single features rap vocals from singer Coral Harris. The single was released on 05 June 2017 via Digital Download and physical release through Next Generation Records. The song marks Coral's first appearance in the UK charts in four years. The song received mostly positive reviews from pop music critics. Upon it's release, "Hate You" charted at #5 on the UK Singles Chart.

Background[edit | edit source]

The song was first available in March 2016, after appearing as the sixth track on Dakota's debut album. On 20 April, Dakota returned after almost a year away, and revealed she'd be releasing the album's third single soon. On 07 May, it was revealed that "Hate You" would serve as this single, with a new version of the song being released.

Release and reception[edit | edit source]

Ailbhe Malone of The Irish Times called it "a turned-up banger, but also claiming that it had a "layer of modernist gloss". Laura Snapes of Pitchfork described the song's "neon nihilism and aggressive self-possession are the drivers of Dakota’s career rather than its destructors".

Music Video[edit | edit source]

The music video premiered on 24 May 2017.

In 1976, there was a general election in Sweden, and the socialist government were pushing their policies of equality for all, but also a more sexually liberated legal system which would see certain acts, formerly classified as abuse, decriminalised, including the lower age of consent. Many saw this as evidence of a more free thinking society, but what if there was a more sinister purpose behind the nation's most powerful men being so keen to allow more leniency in the sexual laws. The famous Swedish scandal known as Bordellhärvan caused outrage at this same time, as the same high ranking politicians pushing for this new 'free world' were also regular customers of a now infamous brothal ran by a woman named Doris. (Yes, that was really her name)

The video begins with Dakota walking through a street in Stockholm. She arrives at her home and enters it. It's very dark and looks trashed from a party. She opens a window to let some light in, awaking Coral and an older women (Doris) who are asleep on the sofa after a heavy night. She tidies the place up while yelling at the other two. Scenes show them tidying, smoking, and when Doris is in the shower, the pair hold hands, and look out the window at the city below. Coral wipes a tear away from Dakota's eye as Dakota rests her head on Coral's shoulder. Doris comes out of the shower and Dakota notices and heads to another room, as Doris stands behind Coral, brushing her hair like a child.

The girls are next shown getting ready, doing their make-up, hair and putting on some fancy dresses, appearing in very seventies styled clothing. Doris comes across and lovingly puts an expensive looking necklace over Coral's head and around her neck. They both look admiringly at it in the mirror whilst Dakota stands in the background watching on before walking off again upset. Coral notices this and once Doris leaves, she takes the necklace off and places it in a draw.

The next scene shows the three females hosting a party, as lots of old men in business suits drink and laugh with them. The girls laugh and giggle, whilst popping bottles of champagnes and dancing with the men. Doris pulls Coral away and whispers into her ear while stroking her hair, leaving Dakota alone on the sofa whilst one of the older men strokes his hand up her bare leg. Dakota gets up and runs to the bathroom. She grabs a bottle of pills whilst the older man stands outside the bathroom door banging on, and downs them.

The police burst into the appartment, and surround Doris and all the older men. Coral looks to her left and see's Doris getting arrested and calling for her to help. She then looks to her right and see's Dakota lying motionless on the bathroom floor. She runs to Dakota and craddles in her arms screaming as the police come and attempt to drag her away. The final scene shows Dakota's lifeless body lying beside Doris and Coris as the police handcuff them all together. The words 'kvinnor är kraftfulla' appear on the screen (meaning women are strong in Swedish).
