Saturn Returns: A Personal Portrait of Shell Ruin, known as Saturn Returns, is a 2016 documentary film focused on the life of British recording artist Shell Ruin. Directed by Jonas Åkerlund Filmed and filmed over a period of twelve months, from early 2015 to the closing night of her Playroom World Tour in March 2016, the film documents Shell's return to music, rare footage of her recording process, backstage scenes from the tour and never before seen moments of family life in New York.
In astrology, a Saturn return is an astrological transit that occurs when the planet Saturn returns to the same place in the sky that it occupied at the moment of a person's birth. This is generally known as time of spiritual rejuvenation between the age of 28-30 (Ruin's age during the documentary's filming).
The documentary premiered at Cannes Film Festival on 12 May 2016 to rave reviews from contemporary film critics. Saturn Returns received a worldwide release on 30 June 2016, when it was aired on HBO in the United States and Sky Atlantic in the United Kingdom simultaneously.
