Damn Wrong About Me is the sixth single from pop singer Elice Claire. The song was written by singer Elice Claire and produced by La Manichansons. It was released as a single on the 20th October in the US and on the 16th November in the UK, as the first single to be taken from Elice Claire's second album Intimate Encounters.

Background[edit | edit source]

"Damn Wrong About Me" is a western style pop song, written by Elice Claire and produced by La Manichansons. In a blog entry La Manichansons wrote:

"Damn Wrong About Me is the first song I've ever produced and I could not be any more proud of what I have accomplished. Elice Claire is an outstanding and talented artist. Working with her was a pure delight. She knew what she wanted and she would not rest until she got the right sound. We actually spent a whole week going back and forth with this song [...] Elice already knew this track was going to be her first single from her new album and that just made everything more exciting. I think the song has a pretty unique sound and I am sure people will like it. I cannot wait for everyone to hear it when it comes out"

Claire discussed the inspiration for the song in an interview with Entertainment Weekly: "I felt the urge to shed this image that everyone portraited me as. People always said 'oh she's Elice, it's impossible to take that chick serious' or 'She's so naive'. I really wanted to show people that I had a little dark side in me." the singer added “People saw me as a role model in a way, even though I’ve been arrested, been accused of doing drugs and even being a lesbian. For a long time, I hated how people thought I was a Disney girl in a way. It really bothered me.”

The song, which is four minutes and fifty second long in length, was recorded immediately after it was written by Claire. Elice commented

"The first time I got into the studio to start recording my new album, I knew from the start I wanted a song to tell people who I really am. I did struggle to write the song and by the end when I was done I had to record immediately. So I met this new producer who just happened to be in the studio with my manager the day that I came in. I told him that I wanted a unique song and he laid this amazing melody which instantly connected with the song."

Critical reception[edit | edit source]

"Damn Wrong About Me" received generally positive reviews from music critics. Digital Spy reviewer David Balls wrote that the song "sends a ripple up through your spine the first time you hear it." He also described it as "slightly odd, endlessly exciting" and said that it "manages to sound quaintly old-school with a great western pop feel to it." Contemporary critics however did not positively receive the song and its theme, some calling it a "pseudo western pop track" and considering it a strange musical composition coming from a songwriter that has potential to write amazing tunes.
MSN Music called it a "damn fine western pop gold" and complimented Claire's feisty vocals which "hit the ground running and burst with effervescence from the opening note."

Promotion[edit | edit source]

"Damn Wrong About Me" was the first single from the album Intimate Encounters, the song was performed on the Apocalypse City Live in the fall of 2009. Elice however played a clip of an early demo on Kiss FM Los Angeles in the U.S months prior to the Alesha tour. A clip of the final edit of the song was played on New York City's biggest radio station Z100 on 28 September. The full song was premiered on The Radio 1 Chart Show on 11 October. The first television performance of "Damn Wrong About Me" was on the SAVE URAPS Telethon on 10 October. On 11 October, Claire appeared on the 2009 Video Music Awards to present an award. In the awards after party, Elice performed the song to guests.

Music videos[edit | edit source]

Shot in the US early August. The original music video features guest appearances by Sophie Ramone and Helena Rossi. A second music video was made for the European Market (including UK) with the Blackout Radio Mix. The alternate video was shot the week of October 6th in the US, the video is set to be premiered 25 October. The album version of the video was premiered in the first week of November on MTV Hits US, followed by a 4Music premiere in the UK a day after.

Version 1[edit | edit source]

In the original version of the music video, Elice is having an affair with one of her husband's worker. Once her husband finds out that Elice is cheating on him, he pays someone to get rid of the guy by sending him away. Elice fears that if she runs away her husband will try to chase after her; so she plans his murder with her two friends (Helena and Sophie). At night, Elice kills her husband and runs away from home with Sophie & Helena who killed their husbands as well. The three girls arrive at a little deserted town only to find their lovers arrested. The girls free their men and escape with them.

Version 2[edit | edit source]

The blackout radio mix is considered version 1 as it was premiered before the original version of the song. In the video, Elice's boyfriend cheats on her and gets another girl pregnant. Elice plays a dictator in the video and when she finds out about her boyfriend's betrayal with another woman, she sends them both into a concentration camp. Elice is seen questioning both her boyfriend the girl he cheated with, and asks why they did it. Scene changes and it shows Elice publicly humiliating the girl for being pregnant. Scene changes and it shows Elice ordering the officers to take them outside and publicly kill both of them... In the end as Elice is leaving the concentration camp, a fire shot is heard inside Elice's car, leaving a question "did someone kill Elice?, did Elice kill herself? or did she kill her driver…?"
