Background[edit | edit source]

Pre-nominations were sent out to a panel of fifteen Urapopstar artists, both older and newer, on September 23 2009. The official nominations were revealed on October 11, with voting opening exactly a week later. It was announced on October 30 that the event would be hosted by Alesha Kurdadze and Shell Ruin. Following her role as co-host of Urapopstar Awards 12 with Neyssa, the event marks the second time Alesha has hosted the ceremony.

Following the Urapopstar Awards ceremony, Ruin was involved in a serious car accident outside of the Earls Court theatre, London. Ruin, five months pregnant, was making her way to the aftershow party with her assistant Vivienne Saunders when her Cadillac CTS was involved in a collision with a Ford Fiesta. Accompanied by Kurdadze, Ruin and her assistant were airlifted to The Royal London Hospital, where Saunders died and Ruin was treated for serious head injuries. Ruin died at 22:19 GMT.

Best Newcomer nominee Paris was also involved in an accident or something. But no one really cared, it's not like she was famous or anything.
