"Game Over" (alternately promoted as "Game Over!") is a collaboration between Amy Marshall and Romo. The song was released February 22, 2010 as the lead single from Amy Marshall's greatest hits album The Breast Of Amy Marshall. "Game Over" is Amy's 18th single and Romo's 9th.

Upon its release, the single reached #1 on the Urapopstar Top 40 Singles Charts, becoming Amy's first #1 in over three years.

Background[edit | edit source]

Romo's musical career began in early 2005 when she won a gig touring as a backup singer for Amy Marshall, leading to many more backup gigs and then her own recording contract. When Romo became a star in her own right, she decided to repay Amy as a sign of gratitude by assisting her in her fourth album, upon hearing that she planned to follow the leads of both Romo and her friend and mentor China by diverting from alternative pop towards a more electro-based sound. The assistance helped stimulate renewed interest in Amy's material and her single "Bang!" (featuring Alesha, co-written by Amy, Romo and Alesha, and produced by Romo) became one of the biggest hits of her career.

Amy wanted to advance on the sound of her fourth album for a new song on her greatest hits album, and to prove her efforts in pop songwriting, initially wrote the song on her own with the intention of releasing it as a solo track. Then she had a change of heart and invited Romo into the studio to revise some lyrics and add her own verse, effectively transforming it into yet another collaborative effort between Amy and Romo.

In order to fulfill Amy's wish to release the single while Romo was in the middle of promoting POPSTAR 2, Romo took a break from her album and partnered with Tesco to release a duets EP with "Game Over" as its lead single. However, Tesco canceled those plans when Romo appeared to express little interest in the release.

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

The song's lyrics detail how the protagonist devoted all her time towards her affection for a person who didn't feel the same way back. Because she can no longer think of what could have been, she must forget about the person completely in order for her pain to go away. Amy's verse, mentioning the date "September 10, 2006", has resulted in many believing she wrote the song about Tyler Wilson. "Postscript", the closing track on Reincarnation, was also about Wilson.

Amy based her songwriting on Romo's style, splicing in pop culture references (the first verse compares her relationship with her lover to the strong bond between Alesha and Shell Ruin, while the second mentions Madonna's single "Hung Up") and shouted vocals often containing obscenities. Amy's method in songwriting was itself lifted from Romo, who says she writes songs for other acts from the perspective of the act she plans to offer it to.

The song contains 31 instances of swearing, including 21 mentions of the word "fuck". The song was critically panned due to its gratuitous use of curse words, much like Romo's single "TITS-FM!" which contained just as many expletives.

Promotion[edit | edit source]

"Game Over" received its radio premiere on January 12, 2010, and was performed live for the first time during the opening performance of Romo's Usurp The Throne tour at Heaton Park in Manchester on January 18, 2009.

Amy began full time promotion on January 11, 2009, with her antics including an appearance on South Park, firing her personal assistant for frowning while holding her umbrella, being arrested for spray painting ex-boyfriend Sebastian Rossi's car, and sabotaging an interview with Sirius-XM because he brought up the arrest. Crazy encounters with other acts, celebrating Christmas in February, and a proposal to change her name to Amy Mar$hall (pronounced Cashall) further cemented Amy's status as one of the pop world's biggest oddballs.

Romo waited until the following week to begin her promotion, as she was still amidst the promotional campaign for her single "Bait & Switch/Hell Is A Discotheque". Romo, in the wake of China and Morris David Cat implementing 3D technology in their works following the global box office success of the film Avatar, followed by landing a deal with IMAX to screen a February concert co-headlined by herself and Amy using 3D technology. Despite Amy having no official role in Romo's tour, she joined her for several shows to perform "Game Over!", and following the critical acclaim for her cover of "El Bastardo", was added as a guest performer during Romo's tribute to Shell Ruin.

Romo has not only attempted to emulate Amy's personality during the course of the single, but she was also spotted with cellulite on her thighs, confessing it was due to an attempt to gain curves like Amy's. She also had a bizarre interview moment when she asked GMTV presenters if they wanted to meet her pet unicorn named Barbara.

The first 500,000 copies of the single include a free dildo.

The single was originally scheduled to be released February 15, against Emily Henning and Esmeralda Dimuzio, but was moved to February 22 after Indigo Peak's split caused the cancellation of their single "Killing Games", as a means of attaining a better chart position. This caused massive outrage among fans on the Internet because they saw it as "exploiting a tragedy".

While Romo did not engage in any feuds this single, she made an enemy out of pineapples, as a result of the Facebook group "Can this pineapple get more fans than Romo?"

Music video[edit | edit source]

The 3D music video premiered February 12 in IMAX theaters across the UK showing Amy and Romo's concert film, Amy Marshall & Romo: Live In Scotland In 3D. That afternoon it also received its Internet premiere on YouTube and television premiere on ITV.

The video does not follow a plot, focusing instead on imagery with game themes. First, Amy and Romo wage war on each other's armies on a chessboard, Amy goes clubbing in a scene featuring elements of the Game of Life, Romo sexually humiliates men playing strip poker with her, and in the final scenes, Amy and Romo engage in sex games in a dim-lit room as they play around with a foam machine.

The video was positively received and was nominated for a Urapopstar Award for Best Video and two MTV Video Music Award nominations in the categories of Best Collaborative Video and Best Humorous Video.

Chart performance[edit | edit source]

"Game Over" debuted at #25 on the Urapopstar Airplay 40 on January 24, 2010, and has since reached #1, becoming Amy's eighth #1 and Romo's sixth. With this, Amy once again ties China for most airplay #1s, who coincidentally earned her eighth with "Dead Famous", the song "Game Over!" replaced at #1. Romo also came out of a three-way tie for third place. It is the first #1 for either act since June-July 2009.

On the sales charts, "Game Over!" debuted at #1 with sales of 94,603 copies in its first week, marking the best first-week sales for both acts; Amy's previous best was 93,459 copies for "No One/Mood Swing" in its first week in April 2005, nearly five years earlier, while Romo's was 90,548 copies for her previous single "Bait & Switch/Hell Is A Discotheque".

"Game Over!" marked Amy's second #1 single and her first in three years and one month, having earned her previous #1 single "I Screwed It Up" in January 2007. For Romo, it was her sixth #1, her first since her collaboration with China, "Belle Ball/Covergirl", in June 2009, as her two previous releases were set back by tough competition and stopped at #2.

"Game Over!" has sold a total of 239,449 copies, enough to be certified gold. Despite its initial high sales and #1 charting, the single failed to reach platinum sales, setting an unexpected low point for Romo that continued with her following single "Bathroom Entourage", her biggest chart disappointment to date, leading her to take an extended hiatus in the latter part of 2010.

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

Game over, I can't take it no more
Game over, get your ass out the door

MOTHERFUCKER! AMY MARSHALL! JENNA JILLIAN ROMO! 2010 BITCHESSSSS!

We started as best friends, we were like Alesha and Shell
Felt like nothing could ever go wrong and then you put me through hell
On the morning of September 10th, 2006
I realized that I was madly in love with you

Couldn't stop thinking about you
Every minute, second, millisecond
I knew at that point we had to be more than friends
But you didn't see eye to eye and now our bond has reached the end

GAME OVER! I CAN'T TAKE IT NO MORE!
I cannot be around you without wanting to fuck you
GAME OVER! GET OUT MY DOOR!
I care for you too much so I gotta let your ass go

FUCK! GET OUT OF HERE!
FUCK! I CAN'T BE YOUR BITCH!
FUCK! I ALREADY TOLD YOU!
GAME OVERRRRR!

Like Madonna once said, I'm so hung up on you
I kept going out of my goddamn way for you
I stopped everything I was doing just to make you happy
During your hard times I was as supportive as I could be
Obviously none of that meant shit to you

You never understood me
You thought my feelings would just blow over
But I'm not the kind of girl who easily forgets
And how you mean so much to me is now my greatest regret

GAME OVER! I CAN'T TAKE IT NO MORE!
I cannot be around you without wanting to fuck you
GAME OVER! GET THE FUCK OUT MY DOOR!
I care for you too much so I gotta let your ass go

FUCK! GET OUT OF HERE!
FUCK! I CAN'T BE YOUR BITCH!
FUCK! I ALREADY TOLD YOU!
GAME OVERRRRR! (I AM FUCKING ROMOOOOO!)

Bet you feel so strong now because you broke my heart
I'm sure it won't be long before you rip another one apart
Like the time you did on November 4th, 2009
After the shit you pulled on me that'll be the last time
I ever pour my fucking heart and soul into a sign of romance
Even if our distance is far enough for us to never have a chance
Is that your girlfriend I see? Like when she uses you like a tool?
She only wants you for the money, the mansion and the swimming pool
I offered love and affection, you had your chance and now it's gone
Enjoy your eternity of being treated like a pawn
We used to be friends, but I wanted to get closer
Sorry you didn't feel the same way 'cause now it's game over
BREAKDOWN!

This shit is so unhealthy for me
I keep thinking about you every minute, second, millisecond
If I can't be your lover, then I don't wanna be your friend
So I gotta let you know that
THIS GAME IS FUCKING OVER!

GAME OVER! I CAN'T TAKE IT NO MORE!
I cannot be around you without wanting to fuck you
GAME OVER! GET OUT MY GODDAMN FUCKING DOOR!
I care for you too much so I gotta let your ass go

FUCK! GET OUT OF HERE!
FUCK! I CAN'T BE YOUR BITCH!
FUCK! I ALREADY TOLD YOU!
GAME OVER!

FUCK! GET OUT OF HERE!
FUCK! I CAN'T BE YOUR BITCH!
FUCK! I ALREADY TOLD YOU!
GAME OVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
