"Hey Lady (Why Don't You?)" is a song by performed by R&B girl group Moodring and pop artist Kirby L. Avalon. The single was one of the contenders for the 2010 Tango Challenge 4: Blind Date competition. As will all of the singles that participated in the 2010 Tango Challenge competition, the song was released officially on 12 April 2010 in the UK.

On the week ending April 18, 2010, the song debuted in the top ten of the URAPS singles chart, becoming both Moodring's and Kirby's second consecutive single to reach the top ten. Based on chart results and single sales, the single came in at fifth place in the Tango Challenge competition. The song spent a total of 6 weeks in the top 40 chart and sold a total of 120,253 copies, falling short of a silver certification.

Background[edit | edit source]

The song was written by all of the members of Moodring and Kirby L. Avalon. The song talks about domestic abuse within a relationship, chronicling the tumultuous relationship between a girl named Christine being abused by her boyfriend/love interest, Bryan. The song was one of the first new tracks written from scratch by Moodring with newest member L'mondrea Brown and the first song cowritten with another act. The sound of the song was described by Kirby as an R&B, somewhat pure/neo-soul song with a hint of pop and adult contemporary in it. Bre stated that the song delievered an anti-domestic violence message and was their way of supporting Lindsay Belle's cause Women Who Rock which both acts missed out on.

Release and reception[edit | edit source]

The song received its first official airplay on 21 March 2010. Originally it was one of the Tango Challenge 4: Blind Date singles with the least coverage and did not receive much praise or criticism at first, being largely ignored, especially by other Tango Challenge 4: Blind Date contestants. However with the onset of the artwork, B side and music video reveals the song became more popular, with generally positive reviews and many remix offers from other, more established artists.

Many critics and chart experts have predicted that the single will possibly debut in the top twenty on its first week.

Music video[edit | edit source]

The music video for "Hey Lady (Why Don't You?)" premiered on 31 March 2010. The video was shot in black and white, with an aim to be touching, shocking and deliver a strong message. The director was uncredited, but rumour has it that Kirby himself was behind the direction. The video opens with the message: "Of all the things love is supposed to do people...love is not supposed to hurt or destroy anyone..." and then continues to tell the story of Christine and Bryan as stated in the song, from the point of view of the vocalists, with intercut performance scenes of all four, with a shocking twist to close it. The video received positive reviews
