Murder is the debut solo album by singer, songwriter, rapper and record producer L'mondrea, released by Bandstocks on May 30, 2011. It debuted at number 1, selling 69,131 copies.

Conception & Production[edit | edit source]

Murder came about using leftover tracks written by L'mondrea for her band Moodring. The songs did not fit the band and were seen as edgier and darker. The only song from this session that was recorded by Moodring was their #2 single Loving Me To Death. L'mondrea decided to make the whole album campaign as interactive as possible, by releasing it through Bandstocks, a company which allows fans to buy a share in the album, and therefore allow fans to own a part of the album, as they have paid for the production. L'mondrea also had fans name the album, with Murder winning the fan poll. L'mondrea produced the album by herself, and wrote the majority of the tracks, however it features co-writers and some cover versions. In the latter part of 2011 L'mondrea wanted to release some more tracks, yet was not ready to start on a second solo album. She stated that several of the tracks were "single worthy" and so did not release them as b sides, instead, reissuing Murder as "The Murder Game" with these tracks included in the package. As well as the five tracks initially slated for release, L'mondrea included a Massive Attack cover, "Safe From Harm" and the Shell Ruin penned track "Megaphone". The now seven tracks were released as a separate disc to the original at the end of October. It kept Murder's dark theme, but was more experimental in genres, with trip-hop, rock and acoustic tracks.

Release & Reception[edit | edit source]

Moodring fans and critics alike saw "Murder" as en evolution of the Moodring sound, with L'mondrea being praised as a songwriter and producer. Although Mood Swings was a popular album, Murder became critically acclaimed, and it's dark and destructive lyrics were also empowering and proud. L'mondrea's unique approach to the album, which focused on an interactive element with fans as well as encouraging new and upcoming artists to get involved went down well, and the album soared straight to the top spot without the backing of any major label.
