Release and reception[edit | edit source]
URAPS TV reviewed the single, stating:
"When we heard Aimee Lyons and Coral Harris had been working together on a track, we didn't know quite what to expect. Aimee's last few releases have included an urban smash, a beautiful ballad, and a dance anthem, so we were intrigued to see which direction she would take with the urban chica, Coral. 'Masterpiece' is a mash-up of all 3 styles. A dance beat and a massive drop, with the urban influences of the rapped verses and the lyric style of a ballad, and surprisingly, it works!
As the British weather finally shows signs of being... somewhat sunny, we think they've chosen the perfect time to release this potential summer smash, and tempt the sun to make more of an appearance, fingers crossed! The slow build up in the first verse leaves you in anticipation as Lyons describes her want to get back together with an ex-lover, but soon the pace changes and we see the change from want to desperation as Aimee proclaims 'If fucking is an art form then lets go create a masterpiece!' Cue amazing drop.
Coral interrupts with a trademark rap, which sits nicely over a calm dubstep-inspired breakdown, and after another Aimee bridge we're back to the powerful chorus and an extended drop, which was just made for the clubs.
Overall, a solid effort, a potential soundtrack of the summer, but we don't want to big it up too much so let's go for 7/10."
Music videos[edit | edit source]
The long introduction of the song sees a cosmic background fading out, with a number of different shapes flashing, rotating and moving about the screen. We see quick shots of Aimee and Coral amongst some of the shapes, and random colours and textures fill the others. As the instrumental builds, the speed of the shapes increases and a number of 10 sided stars fade away to reveal the the title of the video. This little introduction/teaser will be cut out of the video when shown on TV.
The video consists of the following scenes chopped up and randomised to the tune of the song. Aimee is dressed in a black PVC suit, with her trademark ginger hair in a bun. She sings and dances in front of both a white and black screen, sometimes with other images projected behind her. Her face is decorated in jewels; blue and white studs are placed along her eyebrows and under her eyes, whilst white chains of pearl-like beads hang from the top of her cheeks, and swing as she moves around energetically.
Coral, dressed relatively normally, is positioned in front of 5 black screens, with a number of different backdrops of people dancing in the water. Their silhouettes are contrasted by bright backgrounds, and in some cases, fire, but Coral takes centre stage as she sings and moves to the song. We see more PVC shots, which are shown with different shaped textures and appear more prominantly in the video. Shots of Aimee and Coral are disfigured and add to the big cluster of mindfuck going on in the video.
We see close ups of the silhouetted dancers in the water, but mainly close ups of their feet as they splash the water against the camera with their heavy footwork. The background colour changes with every scene. Similar to the introduction, we see triangles and circles fading in and out with different colours and textures, on top of a cosmic backdrop. Random shots of Aimee singing and dancing appear in some of the shapes and turn negative and slightly acid trippy.
Aimee and Coral, both in their PVC outfits, strut and dance in front of a white backdrop. The long shots have pastel/shape textures projected onto them, which stutter and change regularly. These PVC shots are then duplicated and mirror imaged against each other with harsher textured backdrops. They fade in and out of each other, and are a bit of a mindfuck some of the time tbh. Coral and her black screens are now in front of the cosmic image which moves, and has a white structure building behind it, which loops in later shots. Coral is far more energetic in these shots.
We return to the silhouetted dancers dancing singularly against bright yet strong textures. They have more of a breakdancing style to them, and the shots fade from silhouette to them in clear sight and back to the tune of the song. The coloured triangles from the introduction make a reappearance and we see more random shots from the PVC scenes. They vary in speed and size but generally fit the beat.
