Sunny Side Up! is a Freeform original comedy series that premiered on June 16th, 2016. The series follows Jenny, a 20-something year old in New York City who just recently split up from her fiance and lost her license to practice as a nurse after an outburst at work. Jenny tries to begin a new life by moving in with her best friend Daisy and Daisy's mother Carrie-Ann and later finds out she's expecting a child. She befriends her gay barista Tim and sets her eyes on her handsome new neighbor Atticus.
The show airs on Freeform in the United States on Thursdays, and the following day episodes are added exclusively to Netflix users worldwide.
Series Overview[edit | edit source]
Jenny was the best nurse all of New York City could ask for. She also had the hottest fiance a girl could ask for. But when Andy came out as gay and left Jenny for her gardener, she lost the ability to cope and "went crazy" at work. While the audience doesn't know what exactly Jenny did, it resulted in her losing her licence to practice as a nurse. Jenny decides she needs to start fresh and moves into an apartment with her best friend Daisy and Daisy's eccentric mother Carrie-Ann. Things are going well until Jenny discovers she's pregnant!
Jenny sets her eyes on the boy next door, Atticus, a tall, dark and handsome British man with a law degree and a six-pack. While job-hunting she also befriends her local coffee shop barista, Tim - a flamboyant gay man with a passion for fashion and... basketball.

Casting[edit | edit source]
Regina Harper was first rumored to be attached to the project in October 2015. In January 2016 it was announced Harper would play the lead role of Jenny, filming the show during the filming hiatus of Initiate, which airs on ABC.
March 2016 saw the announcement of Candice Accola as Daisy Sinclair and Jane Lynch as Carrie-Ann Sinclair respectively. Later that month it was revealed that Donald Glover would be playing Tim Fletcher. In April 2016, the final main cast member to be announced was Julian Morris who would play the role of Atticus Cole.
In May 2016, it was revealed in a Freeform press release that Andrew Lees joined the show for a recurring role as Andy Hutch, Jenny's ex-fiancé, and Cristián de la Fuente would be playing his boyfriend Eduardo, Jenny's ex-gardener. Annabeth Gish was cast in a recurring role as Jenny's overbearing and overly-cynical mother Julie Royster.
Keke Palmer was announced as joining the show's main cast in September 2016 for the show's second season. Palmer will play Georgia, a friend of Jenny's from her nursing days. The same day, it was announced that Cristián de la Fuente's character Eduardo would also join the main cast for the show's second season.
Seasons[edit | edit source]
Freeform ordered a 10-episode first season due to air in June 2016. A 20-episode season was initially the plan until Regina Harper was considered for the lead role and could not commit to 20 episodes due to her contract with ABC for their primetime thriller Initiate.
The show was renewed for seasons two and three in September 2016 for 13 episodes each to air on Freeform in the US (and Netflix worldwide the following day) in June 2017 and June 2018 respectively.
The fourth season of the show was announced in August 2018 to include 22 episodes due to Regina Harper's ABC show, Initiate, having ended that May. Season four premiered on June 20th 2019. The show took an autumn hiatus from August to November and concluded it's fourth season on February 11th 2020.
The fifth and sixth season renewals were announced in February 2020, the night of the season four finale. Season five premiered on June 18th 2020 and concluded on February 11th 2021 to 0.98 million viewers, a series low for the show. For its final season, Sunny Side Up! was moved to Friday night at 10/9c on Freeform. Season six saw an improvement in ratings during it's 2021-2022 run and the series concluded on February 18th 2022 with 102 episodes produced over the six years.
Despite struggling in live ratings, Sunny Side Up! saw an average 2.03 million viewer increase in Live +7 ratings. According to Netflix executives the show was a roaring success in streaming, placing at #3 in Netflix's Most Streamed Netflix Originals list.
