"Find My Groove" is the first single from Chase Elite's solo debut album Hunting Season. Released in 2011, the Ben Johnston-written single peaked at #2 in the United Kingdom. The instrumentation used in the song includes a pounding bass beat, electronic chords, and beat box sounds.

Background[edit | edit source]

"Find My Groove" was written by Ben Johnston and produced by Timbaland. In March 2011, Chase's sister Candi had an MTV Series titled Sweet Like Candi, in which Chase was a main character. On the show he mentioned a desire to start a music career. This led to many producers approaching Chase showing an interest to work with him. One of these producers, Timbaland, produced this track. Chase has described the track as very expiremental, stating it's the perfect song to start his career with, as it sums up his sound perfectly.

Release and reception[edit | edit source]

The track premiered on Monday 23 May, on Radio 1. The song recieved mostly positive reviews from critics. In the Billboard magazine review of the album, contributor Katy Kroll wrote that Elite "claims to be finding his 'groove', and indeed he is. You can almost feel beads of sweat rolling off the track and if this 'groove' is going to occur throughout all of Chase's material, we are in for some cracking music. Chris Willman of Entertainment Weekly was complimentary towards Timbaland, producer of the song, writing that Timbaland's production brought "a self-consciously hard, edgy club sensibility". Glenn Gamboa of Newsday was complimentary towards the song, writing that it was "The perfect track for Elite, showing him at his best, mainstreaming a combination of the wild, edgy dance-pop style of the greatest R&B acts around, more experimental hip-hop to create a boldly inventive sound that still pleases the masses."

Another review stated that it was not a song that should be good, "but does that really matter when it’s Good in the way that songs are during the summer [...] That kind of good makes songs like 'Find My Groove' completely irresistible.

Music video[edit | edit source]

The video was filmed over two days, on the 14 & 15 May 2011. Before the video's premiere, it was revealed by Chase that the videos from this era shall all follow one another, telling a story. In this video, the story would begin with Chase meeting a girl, played by American model Amelia Clark.

Chase and Amelia in the video's ending scene

The video was revealed on Thursday 16th June at 10pm. It begins with a very flashy sports car pulling up outside a nightclub. A man's feet are shown as he climbs out of the car and walks into the club. The next scene shows Chase with his face covered by a cap. Only his mouth is fully visable as he sings the lyrics to the first verse, with a black background and a single light shining from behind. The next scene shows Chase in a pair of trademark shades, dancing in a club. Several shots of a girl in the club (Amelia) are shown. After the chorus, an angry woman then walks over to Chase and is revealed to be his boss, and he is meant to be the club's barman. He then leaves the dancefloor and starts working on the bar. It doesn't take long before Amelia heads over to the bar and introduces herself. Chase then tells his boss to stuff her job and hops over the bar, takes Amelia in his arms and takes her to his car. The pair then drive away.

For the pre-chorus, several different scenes of Chase and Amelia are shown, showing how their relationship has developed as months pass. The scene's are mostly filled with passion, however the last scene shows Amelia upset and Chase comforts her. The pair then go on a date, as Chase sings to Amelia. As he sings “can you find my groove” Amelia leans into him. As there lips meet, a new screen appears.

Amelia speaks to Chase, telling him that she is falling in love with him, and that she thinks she should walk away now before her heart is broken. She then starts to walk away, but Chase grabs her and pulls her into him and tells her he loves her too. For the chorus, the pair then return to the club where the video first began. The boss looks on not impressed while Chase rocks up the night life. The video ends as Chase and Amelia leave the club, and as the daylight begins to appear from behind them, they kiss.

The video was met with positive response from critics complimenting the continuing storyline and saying they were eager to see what happened next. Chase and Amelia's on-screen relationship was also complimented, being called "realistic" and "gripping". Compliments were also aimed at the raunchiness of the video, with one critic stating "normally this would be far too much, but with Chase it seem's very fitting".
