"Somebody For Me" is the final track on Hunting Season, the debut album by Chase Elite. Released as the fourth and final single from the album, the song is the first (and to date only) ballad released from the British singer. It was also released on Christmas week, alongside a christmas re-release of Hunting Season, titled "Festive Season". The single debuted at #1 on the singles chart, not only proving Chase with his first ever #1 single, but it also meant the track was the official 2011 Christmas #1 single. The single's popularity also caused Chase's album to become the 2011 Christmas #1 album.

Background[edit | edit source]

When in the process of writing his album, Chase felt all the songs on the album had a fast-pace, and the album lacked a ballad that showed of his voice and had the emotion his female teenage fans would crave. Upon releasing the track as a single and his reason for releasing it on the toughest week in the entire year (Christmas week), Chase claimed "I knew from the beggining that this would be a single. We always knew Find My Groove would be my debut and Somebody For Me would be my final release from the era, we just didn't know what would be single 2 and 3. It's being released on christmas week as it's the perfect winter ballad and I know all my female fans are going to eat it up."

The track was heavily promoted. Television appearances included Xtra Factor, Alan Carr, BBC Breakfast, Strictly Come Dancing, Daybreak, This Morning, The Alan Titchmarsh Show and Loose Women. Chase also did signings in several HMV's in England. Upon the single's release date, Chase then carried out a radio interview tour, where from the 20th December to the 24th he was interviewed at Radio 1, Heart, Capital FM, BBC Essex, BBC Leeds, BBC Sheffield, BBC Newcastle, Metro Radio, Real Radio and Kiss FM.

Release and reception[edit | edit source]

The song has received strong critical acclaim from a wide variety of publications upon release, and has been viewed as a highlight of "Hunting Season". In a track-by-track review for the album, Joanne Dorken of MTV UK noted the track's placement at the end of the album saying, "It maybe a cliché, but Chase has saved the best until last with this heartfelt and enchanting piano ballad. ... It's sad but beautiful and displays a shocking fact – Chase Elite actually has one impressive voice." Will Dean of The Guardian claimed the song was the album's "highlight", characterizing it as "gorgeous". That was somehow echoed by Slant Magazine's Matthew Cole who also called the song "mesmorising". NME's Parkin Chris also marked the song as a highlight, describing it as "surprisingly weighty".

Tom Breihan of Pitchfork Media selected "Somebody For Me" as a song of the day, claiming it served as a reaffirmation of popular music: "Sometimes, pop music can still break your heart." Writing for BBC Online, Ian Wade noted that the "final track Somebody For Me, just voice and piano, is an actual thing of beauty, placing the listener in one of those moments where you feel you're in the presence of a future standard." Bill Lamb of About.com wrote that "the piano melody is gorgeous and combined with Chase's heartfelt reading of her words, the effect is highly emotional. You can imagine it being both honked through by talent show contestants and transcended by veterans alike." Lamb went to write that the song is one of the "top songs of 2011" and that "the fact Chase Elite is able to show genuine emotion so well through his voice makes us wonder, why is the rest of the album so auto-tuned!?" Jer Fairall of PopMatters called the song an "absolute magic" and praised Chase's performance.

Writing for the website No Ripcord, Gary McGinley said that the song "has an aching beauty and the hallmarks of a modern standard." He further added that it "sounds poised to soundtrack atmospheric TV trailers over the coming months." A writer of URB magazine stated "Chase Elite is his own biggest fan, who lives in a world of money, fame and success. However surprisingly when he lays his heart on his sleeve, the result is, dare we say it. Rather beautiful". John Murphy of MusicOMH categorized "Somebody For Me" and "Find My Groove" as "the two best songs on the album." He concluded that the song was "desperately sad and utterly, utterly gorgeous." Bary Walters of Spin wrote that on "the piano-led finale just leaves you wondering why Chase Elite is moving into a dance direction for album #2, when his only ballad is as deep and meaningful as this." Sputnikmusic's Joseph Viney said the song "was the exact opposite of what would be expected from Chase, and would easily give the star his best shot at a #2". Allison Stewart of The Washington Post put the song on her list "Recommended tracks".

Music video[edit | edit source]

The music video is set to be filmed in late November and will be the final video to star American model Amelia Clark as Chase's love interest (as she only signed a contract to star in his first four videos). About the video Chase has described the concept as "tragic and emotional". The video was originally due to premiere on Channel 4 on December 16, however due to technical issues it premiered on the station two days later, on December 18. In the meantime, a trailer was released on Chase's official Vevo page on December 17, showing a scene of the video and reading "There comes a time when all good things must end." The video eventually premiered on the single's day of release, December 19 on Channel 4 at 5.30pm.

Chase and Amelia dance in the snow

The video begins where Chase and Amelia are in their school. The bell rings and the pair are finished for christmas. They walk out of the building hand in hand chatting with their mates. Everyone gets in the car and drives home, however Chase and Amelia stand beside Chase's car, and tell each other they love them. "I'll see you at the prom, Christmas Eve" Chase tells Amelia. "3 days, I'll count down the moments" Amelia replies and the pair kiss before Chase gets in his car and drives off. The music begins.

Chase drives off to a jewellery and goes inside, however it isn't shown what he has bought. 3 days pass and Chase meets Amelia in a street before they go to the prom. He see's her and is left speechless by how stunning she looks. Amelia blushes at his reaction. Amelia suggests they head to the winter prom, and begins to walk, Chase pulls out an engagement ring from his pocket and looks at it. He stops Amelia and tells her there's something he wants to ask her. The pair sit down and Chase nervously begins to tell Amelia how he cares about her, but just as he's about to pop the question snow falls from the sky.interupts Chase, being so excited by the snow, so Chase stands up and ask's Amelia to have her first dance with him. The pair stand in the snowfall on the street dancing together. They eventually leave and go to the christmas ball.

Chase undressing in the hotel suite

At the ball, Chase goes to get a drink, however he notices a woman he recognises and follows her outside. It's the woman Amelia slept with (in the video for Don't Stop The Music) and Chase asks her what she's doing here. She tells Chase she's so sorry for what she's done, and gives Chase a room key for the hotel the ball is in, telling Chase the room is her apology gift to him and Amelia. She suggests he goes and gets ready in bed before Amelia follows. Chase thanks her and leaves for the room. Unknown to Chase is that Amelia is watching him speak to the woman through the window, although she can't hear them. Chase leaves and Amelia returns to the dancefloor before they see her. She dances for a while before she see's the woman again. She grabs her and asks her what she was saying to Chase. The woman laughs and tells her she just slept with Chase. Amelia calls her a liar and slaps her, but the woman hands Amelia the spare key to the room and tells her to see for herself.

Amelia walks into the room, however her face drops when she notices Chase in there half dressed. breaks down and begins to cry. Chase starts to zip his pants up and come over to her, however Amelia is so distraught she runs out of the room, unable to see where she's going for the tears. Wanting to just get away, Amelia runs out of the hotel. She rings Chase's phone and begins to leave a message, however not paying attention she runs straight out onto the road and is immediately hit by a speeding car. Amelia flips over the car and smashes into the ground. With her phone in her hand, as she cries she whimpers "I love you" down the phone, and then dies. The video ends showing Chase in bed. He is lying down, listening to the recording from Amelia, he constantly keeps replaying her voice over and over saying "I love you". The camera zooms out from him slowly and blacks out.

Chart performance[edit | edit source]

Due to the single being released on Christmas week, it was announced through the official URAPS Christmas Chart Show 2011 that the single was #1, selling a massive 134,018 copies and going silver in it's first week and becoming the 2011 Christmas #1 single. It sold almost 40,000 more copies than the single at #2. This meant Chase had beat competition from new releases such as No Little Thing, Kleo, Syd Wolfe, Beastette and Ellen Fitzpatrick. The single went silver in it's first week, and gold in it's second, meaning it had outsold his debut single "Find My Groove" in only two weeks. After four weeks the single became Chase's first ever single to reach platinum status, and is easily his best selling single to date.

On 27 November 2011, the song charted at #20 on the download chart. Two weeks later it re-entered the chart at #12 before rising to #5 and finally #2. The week before the single's official charting, "Somebody For Me" debuted in the airplay Top 40 at #19, being that week's higest new entry. It dropped to #21 the next week.
