Emotional Pornography is the fifth studio album from British musician Romo, released September 24, 2012. The album lyrically explores themes of emotional expression and musically carries an experimental, post-dubstep style.

Background[edit | edit source]

Following the URAPS Award-winning success of her fourth studio album Romo, Romo considered retiring from music to focus on a career in film. But she decided to stick to music and intended to release a multi-artists anthology album The Canal Street Chronicles in February 2012. That album never came to fruition although one song recorded for the anthology, "Monster's Mask" by Esmeralda Dimuzio, was released and reached #1 on the singles chart.

Romo wrote six songs for the anthology she intended to keep for herself to perform. Four of those - "Thesis Statement", "Yesterday I Dreamed I Was Famous", "Detached" and "Brutus" - made it to the new album. The songs, to fit with the theme of the unreleased anthology, were based on her experiences in Manchester's nightlife scene and some of the feelings she had after communicating with the bar patrons. The lyrical direction of the album was inspired by the more reflective content of her previous album, although that album's political side is rekindled on the track "Pretty White Girls", a protest against the media's fascination with the lifestyles of attractive white women.

In July 2012, Romo announced she would release Emotional Pornography that September and emphasized the album's lyrical focus on emotions. She said the open expression of herself in the album's tracks inspired the title, saying in an interview, "I am completely naked on every one of the songs on this album, figuratively speaking."
