Jetfire is the self-titled debut studio album by British boy band Jetfire, released on July 30, 2012 through Next Generation Records. The majority of the album was written by members of the band, with Brett Clarkson writting one song on the album. The album was available in individual band member editions, exclusive to HMV, which featured a bonus slipcase and liner notes related to the respective band member. The album has produced four singles, the first being the top 5 hit "Tears In Your Eyes". Upon it's release, the album charted at #4 and the following week peaked at #2. The album was re-released on 19 November 2012 to include the group's Children In Need single "Turn Back Time" which gave the band their first #1 single. "Midnight Trail" was released as the third single on 18 February 2013 and "Dim The Lights" was the fourth single on 25 November 2013.
Singles[edit | edit source]
- "Tears In Your Eyes," was released July 23, 2012 one week before the album, acting as the lead single and Jetfire's debut single. The track was written by the group and charted at #5 on the singles chart.
- "Turn Back Time" is the second single by Jetfire, released on November 12, 2012. The single did not feature on the standard edition of the album, but when the group was asked to record the official 2012 Children In Need single, they created the track and decided to re-release the album to include the song. It is a duet with fellow boyband Difused and charted at #1 on the charts.
- "Midnight Trail" was released as the third single from the album on February 18, 2013 and was released alongside the band's tour. It peaked at #2 in it's second week on the chart.
- "Dim The Lights" is the fourth and final single released from the album on November 25, 2013. It features guest vocals from Coral Harris. The song hit #1 on the UK charts, giving the group their second number one.
Critical Response[edit | edit source]
Music Week gave the album a favourable review stating, "This eponymous album sounds like the kind of radio friendly, polished buy playful, and melody-packed album a pop act should make in 2012. It has its moments of innovation – like the vaguely menacing sub bass of 'Say Dim The Light' or the pure rock stylings of 'Laura' – but both songs soon resolve into massive choruses that will sound great coming out of your radios and TVs." Heat's Karen Edwards rated the album four out of five, saying "The boys switch lead vocal duties throughout, and from indie ballad 'Midnight Trail', the sweet pop sounds of 'Toast To The Girl' and the Rock styled 'Save Our Relationship' and 'Laura', there are plenty of different sounds to enjoy. [...] There's something for everyone on Jetfire – not just for the teenage females among us." Fraser McAlpine of BBC Music felt the album had plenty of highs and lows, and stated, "After they appeared on Uraps Factor, it became clear these boys had the ability to become something big. This is exactly the kind of music we'd hoped they'd make, and although the album does at time rely on cliches, it's overall an enjoyable experience." Paul Taylor of CityLife said the album is hardly full of surprises and wrote, "there is nothing in this album that made us stop and think wow, I didn't see that coming! Perhaps that's a positive thing, giving their fans what they want, but sometimes a surprise is what we actually want. In his review for The Independent, Simon Price wrote: "Their front-loaded debut covers all boy band bases, from the more chart friendly smash "Toast To The Girl" to typical boyband-esque ballad "Crash & Burn" and will sell by the truckload to girls who want a bit more of a badboy than you'd get from Difused or Dante." 4Music gave the album four out of five stars describing it as "the complete opposite of what we're used to hearing from boybands. [...] there's a few 'lighters in the air' moments, but for the most part it's up-tempo, catchy and [...] credible pop music that you shouldn't feel ashamed for liking." Virgin Media's Ian Gittins gave the album three out of five stars and said the album appealed to "pre-teens and tweenies", and concluded: "No matter how accomplished the packaging, they could not do this if the songs were not in place [...] This is a polished, efficient album of ultra-contemporary pop, R&B and Rock."
