Soul is the second album by Moodring. It was released on 4 June 2012 and charted at number 2. It has so far sold 1,994,727 copies and has been certified diamond. It outsold the debut album Mood Swings on its 37th week on the charts.
Background and Recording[edit | edit source]
The recording sessions for Soul began back in 2010, and by spring 2011 the album was confirmed to be completed. A track from the sessions, Loving Me To Death, made it onto a re-release of Mood Swings and was a precursor to Moodring's new, mellow sound. In March 2011, Moodring announced a year long hiatus, so that new Mother Cassie could spend time with her children, Bre could recover from a mental health condition and L'mondrea could work on a solo album. In early 2012 the band announced they were back together, and new music was revealed in April. The first track to be released from Soul is Broken, out May 28, 2012. Soul intentionally differs from Mood Swings, firstly because it was recorded with one "mood" in mind: mellow, soulful ballads. Secondly, the album took on the originally intended concept of Mood Swings, with having no vocal collaborators and being a "Moodring only" album. However, rather than the album being produced mainly by band member L'mondrea, the group went to various big name producers to produce the songs.

Content[edit | edit source]
Unlike the last album, Mood Swings, Soul concentrates on one genre of music, soul-inspired ballads and midtempo tracks. Furthermore, whilst Mood Swings was almost entirely produced by band member L'mondrea, Soul brings in big name producers: Jermaine Dupri, (Diamond Tears); Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, (Colour Me In, Foolish, Spaceman); Babyface, (Broken, (Too Hard To Say) I Love You); William Orbit, (Burn Part 1 and 2, extra production on Innocente); Delerium, (Innocente) and Ryan Tedder; (Change Like The Seasons, This Time). The group did this to diversify the sound, so that even though all the tracks are slow, there is a variation in styles, including minimalist dance and classic r&b.
Promotion[edit | edit source]
This time round, the girls went on tour to promote the album. Songs taken from both Soul and debut album Mood Swings were performed in equal amounts, as Mood Swings was not toured. There were no special or deluxe versions or free items given away with the album, with the band opting for simplicity and a gimmick-free release.
Chart Performance[edit | edit source]
The album failed to reach the #1 spot that their debut album did, however it charted at #2 and was certified diamond.
