"Why I Drink" is the second single from Amy Marshall's fourth album Reincarnation. The single was commercially released September 7, 2009, exactly two months to the week of the release of Amy's previous single "Bang!"

Amy co-wrote the song with Romo, which originated as a rough draft of a song originally intended for her album POPSTAR: The Life & Times Of Belle Ball. She said the lyrics were a suitable reflection of her infamous feud with Esmeralda Dimuzio in November 2007.

"Why I Drink" debuted at #2 behind Indigo Peak upon its entry week, becoming Amy's fourth single to chart in the runner-up position.

Background[edit | edit source]

"Why I Drink" was one of the first confirmed song titles for the new album, confirmed by Romo in an interview. She said that the song started out as a song where her Belle Ball alter ego defended her habits as a reflection upon her loss of support in "If Blair Waldorf Jumped Off A Cliff". After writing a few lines, she scrapped it as she thought it would be redundant to have two successive tracks that defended Belle's habits; "Blair Waldorf" segues into "The Carpet Didn't Bleed By Itself", where instead of reflecting on loss of support, her loss drives her into new and more harmful habits.

Romo revisited the unfinished song while meeting with Amy for several writing sessions for Reincarnation. The two worked together to pitch new lines for the song, with Romo believing it would fit her perfectly as she interpreted it as a reflection on her infamous 2007 feud with Esmeralda Dimuzio. Because Amy had since made up with her and Romo strongly supported her comeback era, they did not want to write it as a personal attack on Esmeralda, but instead as a somber look back on the foolishness of the feud.

Promotion[edit | edit source]

Amy became a DJ on Los Angeles radio station KIIS-FM but was fired for overplaying her own song during her broadcasts. She and her pet monkey Prince got their revenge by attacking the station's program director, Janet Nicks.

Amy and her partner, Katrina Regalna from Horrorfilm Horizon, split up, with Katrina saying Amy was "too insane" for her.

Music video[edit | edit source]

The video was shot between August 19-21, 2009 in Los Angeles, California. The plot involves Amy as part of a stereotypical "celebreality" show where she tries to find love while her suitors seem more concerned with superficiality. As a sign of good sportsmanship, Amy invited Esmeralda Dimuzio to co-star in the video.

Chart performance[edit | edit source]

"Why I Drink" reached #2 on the Urapopstar Top 40 Singles Charts on the week of September 13, 2009, selling 61,368 copies. Its first week sales were lower than "Bang!" but considerably higher than her previous album's second single, "Smiles Are Out Of Style". It debuted behind Indigo Peak's ninth #1 single "Finger, Button, Push/Space Invaders", but was expected to take a back seat to Violetta DiNozzo's "Little Red Riding Hood/Weak & Powerless", which entered at #4.

"Why I Drink" sold 201,362 copies, enough to be certified silver; its fast fall compared to previous recent efforts has prompted worry about its long-term success, with Romo coming out to say she didn't want the single to break her streak of every single she associates with earning platinum sales, saying she wants to become the "URAPS equivalent of Oprah".

Despite its success on physicals, "Why I Drink" was Amy's first airplay chart failure since "It Must Be Love", only reaching #18.
